Re: Modified DRS to be made mandatory
hmm. interesting discussion on hawkeye in the break
seems like the point of first impact of ball on pad is manually selected by an operator and its not automatically done by the computer. depending on the selection by the operator the prediction could vary widely
they also showed an old replay of a sehwag lbw appeal that was originally turned down and then after a review it was given out. the ball clearly pitched outside leg, brushed the front pad and then hit the back pad. but since the operator selected the first point of impact as the one on back pad he was given out. can understand a bit now why the indians are so opposed to just hawkeye. it seems to be the only technology that has a manual input in its calculations/output

So keep Steve Bucknor away from the operating system and get on with life.

It's ok, the rest of the world will get on using hawkeye whilst we make allowances for the special kids.

Re: Modified DRS to be made mandatory
Bumble talked sense the other day- If India dont want to use it, then they don't have to. But England will....
After all, isn't that what both teams want? India would be shooting their own argument in the foot if they said that scenario "is not fair."

Snicko takes too long to compile, but is the most accurate? It's seconds not hours.

It takes about two minutes unfortunately. It has to be pieced together from the separate audio and video feed, I think it's done manually using the atomic time stamps as the reference.
Re: Modified DRS to be made mandatory
If they stop, they stop, snicko should be used when you look at how good it is surely?
They stop for drinks these days when it's 10 degrees and they have 3 jumpers on no matter these days.

Re: Modified DRS to be made mandatory
I'm personally not comfortable with any big pauses, whether they do it now for the wrong reasons or not. It's too long. Decisions should be made within 30 seconds IMO.

What Dan said. Has to be built by a human, syncing up the video to the sound. An "edge" can easily be made to look like a rogue sound after the ball has passed the bat, depending on the competence (or honesty) of the technician involved. And the same in reverse - a clip off the thigh pad can be made to seem as if it happened as the ball passed the bat.
If it were part of the DRS, they'd be under pressure to build the snicko as quickly as possible, corners could be cut, mistakes could be made, and before you know it, India are sitting on a plane refusing to play ball unless a neutral television production company is providing the broadcast.
Re: Modified DRS to be made mandatory
Maybe but TV shows howlers, Danny. Cricket isn't a fast sport, so waiting for snicko, at least in tests shouldn't be a problem. Why should an ageless, timeless game worry about the time taken for a decision? In the shorter versions you have a point.

Aye, I'd warrant - given the type of applications they'd most likely use - it would take some deft work to do it quickly and accurately. However, they can get it down to a finite discrepancy. Furthermore, there's a distinct difference in the pitch of the ball hitting the bat and the ball (or bat) hitting anything else. The spikes are less frequent and of a higher differential than anything cloth-made. An educated guess could be made. If it was that close, they'd be able to get it correct almost all of the time.

Trust, who trusts who? Sad indictment of the world really, pisses me off, because I know I wouldn't cheat if I was making the technology work and I could wait for a truthful answer if I was playing.
Other than that let India win.

So it was YOU?Chivalry Augustus wrote:I've got a great idea. Let's have a DRS system but let's make it completely sh*t. Let's make it so sh*t that it will be capable of making and endorsing the same bad, original decision. Let's make it so sh*t that it's like not having a review system at all. I think it's a great idea and completely a step in the right direction. I think the ICC should be credited, actually. They usually manage to make everything sh*t within a few months of it coming in, in this case it has taken the soft, testicle-less morons a few years.
