Probably takes the biscuit as the shortest most famous Test innings . Slightly longer versions:
Foster's 287 at Sydney (on debut)
Hutton's 364 at The Oval
Edrich's 219 at Durban (would have been even more famous had England won)
More recent examples:
Boycott's 100th 100 at Headingley in 1977
Beefy's 149* at the same ground 4 years later
Most extraordinary innings <100:
Hutton's 62* at The 'Gabba in 1950

Greatbatch even. SRW's ton at Sydney was more notable for the radio commentary that went with it.

Garq off. Lara's 400*, obviously.
Quite a lauded one is always Gooch's 154* in 1991.

[peterg] What about McCabe's 238 in that same series. And McCabes 189 v South Africa. And his 187* in the Bodyline series [/peterg]
Actually, the Bodyline ton is well up there.

Re: Most famous innings in test history.
Greatest single-handed match-winning effort (Bradman shared the glory with Morris at Headingley in 1948):
Gordon Greenidge's 214* at Lord's in 1984
Best backs-to-the wall effort to save a match:
Atherton's 185* at The Wanderers in 1995
(Again joint honours to Peter Willey and Bob Willis against the Windies at The Oval in 1980)
Most sustained slog:
Compton's 278 at Trent Bridge in 1954.

Re: Most famous innings in test history.
Greenidge's effort was made in the 4th innings, Bannerman's in the 1st. Outstanding as Bannerman's effort was, Billy Midwinter (5-78 in England's 1st innings) and Tom Kendall (7-55 in England's 2nd) also had a small part to play in Oz' eventual triumph.
Along similar lines, Laxman's 281 at Eden Gardens in 2001 although honours must be shared with Dravid's 180 and, like Beefy's knock at Headingley, made in the 3rd not the 4th innings.
Best effort after losing control of natural functions:
Dean Jones' 210 at Chennai (Madras) in 1986.

Looking mostly at innings where one player, as opposed to two, scored the bulk of the runs which is why Bannerman and Greenidge are comparable.

Re: Most famous innings in test history.
Should we start a thread on the "least famous" innings in history.
Arthur Morris' 196 in the same innings as the most famous innings might qualify.

Again, along similar lines, Gooch's 154* against the Windies at Headingley in 1991.
In terms of the strength of the opposition, the conditions, the proportion of total runs scored and contribution to the eventual result it must rank even above Botham's 149* on the same ground a decade before as the greatest post-war innings made by an England player. It certainly ranks with Bannerman's effort on all counts listed above.

Well, start a separate thread then rather than intertwine with this one.

Re: Most famous innings in test history.
Come orf it - least famous innings? Ridiculous premise - "Oh it was definitely Mo Tate's 12 in 1928". Ridic.
