I know they've only beaten a lowly team, but I think they have real prospects of rising through the ranks:

Bracewell - a successor for Martin has been found
Brownlie - how could the Wozzies miss this bloke?
Williamson - has all the shots, and heaps of time
Boult - what a prospect

If they can keep Taylor, Ryder, Guptill, Southee, Vettori, and McCullum on the park, they will win more Tests. They should beat Sri Lanka easily, for a start. The wicketkeeping position seems unresolved.

Aye, we discussed at length the class of Brownlie (outstanding for a Grade player) and Boult (lovely technically perfect leftie action).

As Coney pointed out on Sky here after the match, the NZ Board has to back their side by giving them more Tests to play esp. against top sides like the Bannies, Saffies & England. Overseas boards also have to offer them more tours and longer series or the improvement will be lost in the wham-bam of ODI & T20 cricket.

Boult looked an absolute gem within his first few overs. Why can't our left-armers bowl like that?

btw, has the due credit been given to NZ's bowling coach?

I'll add to that-

Neil wagner- Left arm Saffie quick. Qualifies for NZ in a few months. Dominates first class cricket, swings it around at 140kph.

Adam Milne- 19 year old who consistently bowls at 150kph+. Played a few T20 internationals last year. Could be the Kiwi's x-factor.

Jeet Raval- Indian born opening batman, moved to NZ as a kid. Highly rated.

But let's not get carried away. NZ will almost certainly never be the top ranked test team. They just don't have the depth of talent. Their batting remains a big worry, even if they have a very good attack.n They can aim for 4th in the World at best, imo.

Agree they will not get to the top, but 4th or even 3rd is not beyond them. At least they are traveling in the right direction.

Damien Wright is the Kiwi bowling coach.

Tasmanian, of course, which is why Lardy mentioned him.

No, Wright was born in Casino. He came to prominence in Tasmania, and moved to Victoria late in his career.

I may have mentioned my belief that he should have played Test cricket.

Though he might still be needed.

Not sure they were that good three years ago, but they are pretty decent now. Probably as good as when Hadlee last played for them as there are fewer weak links.

They weren't as good three years ago, but the signs were there!

Trev goes for the trifecta.
