"The co-host of Channel Ten program The Circle has publicly apologised for making a sexist and disrespectful comment about Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith, saying she had never met the Australian war hero and "felt sick" at the angry backlash she had received after branding him brainless.

Yumi Stynes admitted she did not know much about Corporal Roberts-Smith when she commented on a photograph of the shirtless war hero in a swimming pool yesterday, saying: "He's going to dive down to the bottom of the pool to see if his brain is there."

Stynes's guest, co-host and veteran journalist George Negus had then quipped: "I'm sure he's a really good guy, nothing about poor old Ben. But that sort of bloke, and what if they're not up to it in the sack?"

On the way back this arvo from picking the car up from a service, talkback was buzzing with this story. Yumi and George had lame shots at Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith, and it caused massive outrage. Yumi did the right thing and apologised in tears on air at her first opportunity as the backlash roared along. Negus was less forthcoming, issuing a pretty pissweak written "if Ben took offence" apology through Channel Ten.

Quite a few Army dudes called in and said Ben has a thick skin and would just shrug, but the wider public was well shat off.

Opposition defence personnel spokesman Stuart Robert condemned the comments made by Negus and Stynes.

"For such extraordinary feats of bravery and for the humility with which [Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith] has lived his life to be so denigrated by these two journalists is not only unacceptable; it is contemptible," he said.

"The irony is that the freedom of speech these journalists exercise is a freedom neither of them have fought for -but which both enjoy."

Mr Robert called for an apology from the network and the journalists.

Good comment.

Still, calling them "journos" is like calling Kyle Sandilands a journo.

As for Roberts-Smith, didn't someone on this forum raise some issues about him and the manner in which he got his VC? Can't recall what it was but it might have been something like "he told people he wanted to win a VC and delibertately put himself into situations where he might be able to win one".

Sounds like more 'Journalistic Licence' to me. I have some mates who saw service in Vietnam & having talked to them over the years, they would say such notions are utter BS.
