Re: Jimmy Savile
There have been rumours for years about that. I remember hearing Jerry Sadowitz saying pretty much everything that has come to light in one of his stand up shows waaaaaay before any of it broke officially. Some it seemed to be exaggerated for comic effect at the time (including but not limited to f*cking corpses) but pretty much every word of it has ended up true.

So Savile was the original munger?
Incidentally, I have yet to see a picture of the 'man' in which he does NOT look like a highly disturbed sexual deviant. How did he get away with it for so long? Did he buy access to his victims whilst a National Nelsonian blind eye was turned in his direction?

Re: Jimmy Savile
TBF, I don't think you can convict a person in the public eye on the grounds they look highly dodgy. Otherwise Tony Abbott, Margaret Thatcher, Vlad Putin and a million others would have been banged up long ago.lardbucket wrote:So Savile was the original munger?

Hence I don't regard it particularly as a shame on the population of the UK.
The guilt by collaboration of those in the special schools, care homes and hospitals, etc., is a different matter. Those local, those in the know, those who issued the special access keys without asking any questions. And those in the BBC who happened to open the door when he was at it.

Re: Jimmy Savile
****** jail ...we're ripping up his plaque
Rolf Harris’ St Georges Terrace plaque likely to be ripped up
AAP AND PETER LAW AAP JULY 01, 2014 11:49AM 0
PERTH, Rolf Harris’ home town, is moving to tear up monuments honouring the disgraced entertainer, while his boyhood school has already decided to pull down his paintings.
The 84-year-old was today found guilty of indecently assaulting four girls — one of whom was as young as seven or eight — in the UK between 1968 and 1986.
A West Australian Education Department spokeswoman said that several Harris artworks would be removed from the walls of Perth Modern School, where he was a student from 1943 to 1947.
“The Department of Education has confirmed that Perth Modern School will be removing all artwork by Rolf Harris from display in the wake of a guilty verdict on charges of indecent assault.”
.
She said the paintings would need to be professionally removed over coming days and the school’s board would meet to decide what to do with them.
The paintings, which were kept at the school on display until the conclusion of the trial, will now be archived.
Two local councils are considering what to do with monuments honouring “The Boy from Bassendean”.
City of Perth Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the council would likely tear up a footpath plaque on St Georges Terrace that commemorates Harris.
The decision would be made in coming weeks, Ms Scaffidi said. “We’ll consider the removal, most likely, of the plaque,” she told 6PR.
The council would first ask for the views of committee that selected him for a plaque, she said.
“I can’t say until the council decision is made but the general feeling around the place is that we don’t accept those kind of offences,” Ms Scaffidi said.
Mrs Scaffidi said her personal opinion was to remove a plaque honouring Harris on St Georges Terrace in the CBD.
“It’s a very sad issue and something we need to deal with.”
BASSENDEAN SHUNS DISGRACED ROLF
And the Town of Bassendean will consider at a special meeting on Thursday whether to remove Harris’ status as a freeman of the town.
Bassendean Mayor John Gangell wants Harris stripped of his Freemanship — and for all of the entertainer’s paintings in the council chamber to be removed.
Mr Gangell said a special council meeting had been called for Thursday for the town’s councillors to vote on the issue.
A plaque near Harris’ home on Bassendean Parade would also be pulled up if the move is backed by a majority of councillors.
“My view, and what I will be urging the council, is to strip him of his Freemanship and also to remove all artworks that the Town of Bassendean has displayed,” Mr Gangell said.
“The crime in which he has been convicted are heinous and cannot be condoned, regardless of who he is or what he is.
“It’s a sad day, obviously, and there will be a lot of shock in the community. There was always a possibility of this verdict, but nevertheless it’s a shock to hear the verdict.”
“It is quite disheartening to have to do that but due to the seriousness of the crimes . . . you just simply can’t proceed in any other way.
“It’s something that we must do now to distance ourself.”
Harris is one of only six freemen of Bassendean, Mr Gangell said.
A photo portrait of Harris was removed from Bassendean’s council chambers in May.
Mr Gangell said Harris had been “the hero of the town”, so his conviction came as a shock.
“Unfortunately that world stage that he’s put Bassendean on has now come crashing down.
“And we simply cannot tolerate the horrendous crimes for which he’s been convicted.”
Deputy Mayor Mike Lewis agreed Harris should lose his Freeman honour, but believes his artwork should remain on show in the council chamber.
“I still think it should be on show because I think his art is something quite different,” Mr Lewis.
“I personally feel it’s abhorrent what he’s actually done, but I still feel the art is a different story altogether.
“Our town is being amalgamated in the next 12 months anyway, so even if we do have it there, after the amalgamation in a year’s time there is a good chance those facilities are going to be closed.”
Asked if there was a danger that leaving the paintings up condones Harris’ crimes, Mr Lewis replied: “I suppose there is, but it depends on how you see things.
“If you go back in history where movies made by an American movie producer, the one is not allowed back into America otherwise he’ll be arrested, they don’t ban his movies to be shown in America because it’s quite separate from what the man does.
“I’m still a little bit in two minds but I’m tending along the lines of thinking that art is art and criminal activities are criminal activities.”
Harris is likely to be jailed at his sentencing on Friday.
