WOMEN not safe in Delhi.

This seems to be a fairly serious situation.

Sad situation. It isn't the first and will be nowhere near the last. The incident sparked an emergency discussion on the safety of women in parliament, but with such shortage in law enforcement officials, what really can change? Sex being a taboo subject just makes vermin like them force it in such ways.

And as a follow up, it has been reported that the perpetrators were made to eat faeces in prison.

Rapist and rape accused have won elections and are sitting in Parliament with security and they are discussing women's safety in Parliament? Crimes against women and senior citizens are increasing. Just la week back a politician was molesting a cop's daughter and when the cop interfered he was shot dead by him in Punjab. There are a pathetic number of 321 cops per 1,00,000 citizens in Mumbai, 500 per same in Delhi. How can cops maintain law and order at such a pathetic ratio? Half these cops don't co-operate with people, resist filing actionable complaints to show a lesser crime rate, whole nearly 2000 of them are diverted at any time fpr giving security to useless VIP at any time. In Delhi, police security is a sign of social symbol than necessity. Its a banana republic in reality.

I am not one who particularly believes in the practical effectiveness (or usually even desirability) of martyrdom.

But you have to hope at the very least that this shameful episode will have some positive effect, in releasing a grass-roots demand for changes. The wider social and educational ones of the sort Trike mentioned won't happen quickly, but a more public establishment of values of public respect on the one hand, and a tightening of sanctions against such violence on the other hand, you would think would be possible in a short term.

In other words, I think those are the wider (social and legal) problems that the case points up in its horrendous personal way, and that Trike and Vikas both allude to.

Even if every case were reported though, I'd not think it'd out of tune with any developing country with a population of one billion (or even the USA likes). Rape per se I'd think would be reported, it's the comparatively lesser offences that there's the problem with. What happened is extremely unfortunate, but this is more a realisation by the oblivious media when something galling happened right at their doorstep; a month ago were getting 2 inches of column space in the most remote section of the newspaper's city column.

Only where victims feel that they would be treated sympathetically by an efficient police force, and where they can depend on the support of their families and friends.

I note also from reports that many of the rapes which are reported by victims and do proceed to legal action are still left languishing for years before the alleged perpetrators have to face court. Hardly encouraging.

It's not the norm, but it does happen in some cases. But even then reaching a judgement does take ages in many cases.

not particularly for rape. the average legal case in indian courts lasts 20 years and more

'fast-track' courts take around 10 years. this is one of the major problems. conviction rates are abysmal, also due to bungling up of evidence (sometimes deliberate) by the police

north india is particularly unsafe for women due to the heavily patriarchal societies and a culture of machismo. a woman in delhi is usually not advised to venture out alone after dark and to avoid public transport. you meet many women from delhi who refuse to move back after living for some time in cities in the west and the south

Only in India....at 18 you are adult enough to drink, vote and marry and can also be a 'juvenile' rapist! The dicks in the Parliament extended the juvenile age from 16 to 18 for no reason.

You think this case was gross? A gang rape where a woman was raped by 42 men, including some powerful politicians is still awaiting a proper trial and justice after 17 years in Kerala and over the years all the politicians managed to get their names off the accused list using power and money.

Imagine this girl in Kerala whose family is outcast-ed by their neighbors and locals, who was gangraped by 42 men and not more than one person has done any prison time as she waits for justice for 17 years. Among her rapists were powerful Congress politicians who over time succeeded in managing the law using money and muscle power and got their names struck off accused list! Even SC has been sitting on her case for 9 years in a shocking development! She got only a pathetic low rung Govt job in compensation and there too the powers that be who wanted her to stop her case harassed her on false charges of propriety!
