Jonathan Trott
I am a fan of his batting, there is a lot of talk about Cook but i reckon this guy is equally good. Also, he is very graceful(unlike Cook)

Re: Jonathan Trott
Not a ruthless as Cook. Trott's been throwing it away in the last 18 months - become a bit of a swisher outside off stump.
But he's a nuggetly little f*cker who the opposition must loathe.

Re: Jonathan Trott
I don't watch too many games involving England but out of the 9 or 10 (out of Trott's 40) test matches that i have seen( plus the highlights) i don't think i have ever seen him look out of form or some one who does NOT belong in test cricket. Cook on the other hand looked awful against Aamer and Asif.

Trott can be a nudger and nurdler, but I like his balls.
Not literally.

No wonder Paksters get confused with Afridi's age. He's almost 32.

The Trott cover drive is one of the prettiest shots in the game.

Re: Jonathan Trott
Easily the best number three England have had in my lifetime. Which might not be saying much as MIchael Vaughan is probably next on the list, but it's reassuring to have a rock solid bloke who's selfish for runs coming in first drop.
Re: Jonathan Trott
Certainly been a rock with the only real negative aspect being his average of 33 from the seven tests he has played against SA home and away.

Well played, distant sprog of Alberto (apparently).
And also to less distant sprog of the Brylcreem Boy.

I think just as loathsome to the opposition are his rituals between each delivery and at arriving at the crease. And for that, I say "Top Man".Dello wrote:Not a ruthless as Cook. Trott's been throwing it away in the last 18 months - become a bit of a swisher outside off stump.

Re: Jonathan Trott
I think that was the period when Cook was at his lowest and poorest form and revealed his weakness outside off-stump. He went away and worked on it, successfully it would seem, the mark of a great or potentially great player. But they should have taken the opportunity to sack him then. Re: Jonathan Trott
His merciless fiddling has done a fine fine job for England. But I must admit that he's heavily annoyed me at times.

Well, not sure of your age but here's the top England number 3s from the last 30 years:Dello wrote:Easily the best number three England have had in my lifetime. Butcher 2796 @ 38.30
Trott 2539 @ 49.78
Hussain 2352 @ 40.55
Gower 2270 @ 50.44
Vaughan 1494 @ 40.37
Bell 1437 @ 39.91
Gatting 1330 @ 44.00
Stewart 1307 @ 43.56
Hick 1141 @ 34.57
These are the only ones worthy of a mention really, next in line is Cook who has only played 12 innings there! Surprised to see Butcher has batted more at number 3 than anyone else in that time. But Trott could soon have the top aggregate and average...

Re: Jonathan Trott
Gower, I should've remembered, but his career was coming to a close as I was starting out on my cricketing journey. Not sure I saw the best of him (live).
Re: Jonathan Trott
Still think Butcher was a very good player. His career should've been better than it was. Bags of talent.
Re: Jonathan Trott
The thing about Gower was, however long one of his innings may be, and however much he made; you never really noticed it, until the inevitable waft outside off; and he'd be gone. That's it, Goodnight Folks. GAWN!Dello wrote:Gower, I should've remembered, but his career was coming to a close as I was starting out on my cricketing journey. Not sure I saw the best of him (live).

Re: Jonathan Trott
We've always had good openers in that time - Gooch, Atherton, Stewart, Vaughan, Trescothick, Strauss and Cook to name the most prominent ones - but number 3 has always been a trickier one to fill. Nasser was pretty solid there for a while. Think we saw the best of Vaughan when he was opening. But at times we've been torn between playing a "third opener" and putting an attacking strokeplayer there. Trott's certainly nailed down the slot more firmly than anyone for years though, just think that at the start of that 2009 Ashes series in which he made his debut it was between Belf and Chavi Flops for the position!
