comebacks
Grant Hackett is back in the swimming team after 6 years out of the sport!
LINK
Other late, late comebacks (varying success) that I recall: Shane Gould, Geoff Huegell, Jennifer Capriati, Kieren Perkins, Bob Simpson.
I guess such apparently amazing comebacks are but further evidence that form is temporary, while class is permanent.

Re: comebacks
Didn't Mark Spitz try to comeback to one of the 90s Olympics as well?

Re: comebacks
The most famous comeback of all was Michael Jordan, after he retired from basketball to play minor league baseball for two years. Came back and won a second 'three-peat' with the Bulls from 96-98.

Re: comebacks
Basketball? Is that still regarded as a sport?
Only semi-serious, but it's not much of a game IMO and it has little interest outside the US - like NFL I suppose. I don't even think about it between Olympic games. AFL would have similar relevance outside Australia.
Any great hurling comebacks in Ireland?

Fair enough point, basketball is pretty dull and Yank-centric, but Jordan is one of those names that transcends sport, he's been a global "brand" for a couple of decades even for those with no real interest in his sport.
