But isn't this invective against an infuriating minority something a hack could write in many countries, if only to stir a controversy and - even "better" - attract a shitfest?

Plus, it seems there's always someone in any economically and socially (civically) relatively advanced civil society with (some) humane features.ready to hop up and to decry a Nanny State as lamentably responsible for many/most of the ills detected therein.

On the "objective" content of the argument (specifically along the lines "our society is more ill-mannered/ignorant than country X, Y, Z"), I'm not sure there's much point in pursuing it. Such comparisons are always conditioned by personal experience, personal preference ... and are generally invidious (what's the point of participating in any such contest?), so essentially play into the hands of said hack & hackbase.

You've got to remember they have a different legal system on the continent. Or it could be as Sir Humphrey said about rules and regulations in Europe. "The Germans will love them, the Italians won't be able to enforce them and the French will ignore them. Only the English will resent them."
