Clearly England's biggest problem this series.

It has been one of the more peculiar aspects of this series that Aus has totally outbatted England at 1,2 & 3.

Even so, would still be a weakness at 5,6 and no keeper.

Apparently (Cricinfo) only Gooch has had a worse Ashes series as opener.

Even Wally Edwards and Bruce Francis did a little better.

I didn't intend to deploy the (shouting) capitalisation, but since I did ... left-handed Yorkish tickling hack?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Gooch wasn't a part of a winning team in that series.

If that's the case then I imagine he is quite comfortably the worst opener in a winning team (possibly worst player, particularly if Buttler manages a few more today) to have played in every test.

Well, Collingwood got an MBE for scoring 17 runs in 2005 so you guys should'nt be too hard on Lyth.

But Collingwood batted a vital two hours for those 17 runs to help England save the test at the Oval.

I seem to remember Lyth taking a half-decent catch in the slips at Edgbaston. That's probably his biggest contribution this series.

Which Gooch series are we talking about? He didn't open in 94-95, managed a couple of 50s in 93, was damn near the team's best bat in 90-91, was nowhere near the worst in 89, didn't play 86-87, nearly made a double in 85, was in Saffieland for 82-83, can't recall 81, made a 99 in Melb 79-80 (which wasn't an Ashes series anyway), was a mile better than either Boycott or Brearley in 78-79, didn't get a game in 77, didn't open in his debut series....

Yeah I was checking the 81 stats myself and they are pretty much just as bad, although Gooch scored a handful more runs at an average of 1 run better.

So Lyth still just takes the prize as it stands!
