Good career, but I always had the impression he could have done more.

Re: Mukka pulls the plug
He's done a great deal to breathe new life into New Zealand cricket. They are no longer considered a boring, workmanlike team who are competitive but ultimately unsuccessful. Under McCullum, they have become one of they world's top four teams.
Farewell that man.

Didn't think much of him when I first saw him. He's improved greatly. Always been hit and miss, but more hit in the last three or four years. He's been a great servant for NZ.
Re: Mukka pulls the plug
One of my fondest memories of Mukka was when he was tearing us apart in a T20 game in Sheeptown. He had just lapped Shaun Tait over his left shoulder for six, and all Spud could do was stand there, shake his head and laugh. It was a remarkable shot in a remarkable innings. I had the same reaction as Tait, just shook my head in wonder. He made 120-odd that day.

Became a great cricketer and servant of the game.
Not sure he was ever going to become a consistent Test match batsman, in the sense of churning or grinding out centuries. Not his temperament, not his forte.
But there is more to cricket - even Test cricket - than massive statistics. He has contributed everything else in generous measure.

Not 'the most over-rated cricketer ever', 'good captain, average batsman'?

Strange that he's not going to bow out after the T20 mallarkey. Would've thought NZ would've wanted his nous and match winning potential in that tourney.
