The difference between Boycott and Chappell- Like him or hate him, people listen to what Boycs has to say. Chappelli's rants are more often than not ignored.

Both are legends. Boycott was the better bat. I wouldn't say either is bitter.

Both are too full of themselves for my liking but I have to admit that they achieved enough to justify being critical of what they are watching.

That argument doesn't really define who a better player is though, I'd rather pay money to see Chris Gayle than Shiv, but Shiv is the better player, in test matches anyway.

That's what I mean. You make my argument for me. Though in Boycs case you'd have to look at his contribution to the team under the circumstances.

Do you go to entertain the crowd or do the job you're good at that might win your team the game though? We can't all be flashy can we? Sometimes "boring" is a necessity even though it's hard to watch.

Boycott any day. The supreme master of defensive batting - one of the great arts of cricket (but unfortunately now lost).

There are a lot of bitter ex-pros.

Bitter that they didn't get the cash and/or the recognition of later players, the number of caps they felt they deserved, and/or were blocked by the gentlemen's club/favouritisms, .... etc.

Or all of the above.

Ian Chappell leaves Steve Waugh out of top 25 Ashes players, calls him selfish

Ian Chappell has ranked his top 25 Ashes players since 1972 and left out former Australian captain Steve Waugh, calling him 'selfish' in the process.

Chappell selected the 25 players based on 'eye-test', and despite not including Steve, somehow managed to fit in Waugh's brother Mark at number 19, and his own brother Greg at number 3.



"Cricket is not a statistical exercise and I didn’t want selfish players on my team, hence the absence of Geoff Boycott and Steve Waugh," Chappell wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

Steve Waugh played 168 Test matches for Australia (equal first with Ricky Ponting), captaining his country in 57 matches for 41 wins (second behind Ponting).

This includes being captain in two Ashes series, with eight victories coming from nine Tests.

Waugh also led Australia to 16 Test match victories in a row between 1999 and 2001, a world record that Ponting later equalled.

The 74-year-old commentator also listed the powerful Ian 'Beefy' Botham at number 14, a little lower than cricket tragics would have thought when considering the all-rounder's talents.

"I don’t rate Botham as highly as some because he was a bully-boy cricketer; he excelled against opponents who allowed him to push them around," Chappell said.

Other notable players that Chappell left out include: Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke, Stuart Broad, Michael Vaughan, Mark Taylor and Michael Hussey.
