Yup. Decent day of cricket that.skully wrote:Riveting Test Cricket.
Pretty much all square, I reckon.
Aus 4-209 at Stumps.
Even so, for my nerves I wouldn't mind 3 days of rain so at least I can relax knowing another 5-0 can't happen...

Yep Handy shows character.....watching him builds it. Marsh was the same but looked a bit more fluent. Still they've laid a foundation for a decent partnership and if a couple of bowlers can hang around we still might make 300 or 330, which might be nearly enough for this mob.

Aye. Very much players with pretty eccentric styles that they have made work.

Level pegging. Oz will need to bat late into session 2, to get some runs and lock the Pomgolians into the night session.
Enjoyed the feistiness yesterday. Expect the Poms might cop a spray when they bat.... There may also be some short quick stuff. Malfoy when batting will have lots of funny chats with square umpire when 'facing up'.
Reflecting on D1, I thought Bangers batted the best of the home team. Hope gcspoc shouted him a telly. Woakes bowled well for the visitors. Root captained thoughtfully though could have attacked a little more. Seems an astute captain and a vast improvement on Cook.

Agree on Root's captaincy. He is at least more positive and willing to try things than Chef was.

Given the D/N conditions, pink ball, evening swing, 4th innings batting (if it's not a follow-on ,,,,), relative morale of two sides after Aus were put in, then 206-6 or 7 would probably have been about level.
Australia, even with Smith gone earlier, look to have have a chance to bat on to 400-450, and have 40-50 mins hooping it around at the brittle Pom top order. Maybe knock over 3 or 6. Match essentially over.

In the end the rain worked in our favour because England didn't get the overs with the new ball under lights that Root appeared to be banking on at the toss.

Um, I think he was relying on the first new ball rather than the second.

Wank lbw in the first over. What a surprise.

Close call for Marsh. Paine is batting with some intent.

2 lbws overturned against Jimmy. That's going to make him happy.

Cue England having a whinge about the DRS system.

He made the point at the toss that bowling first gives two chances with the new pink ball on day one.
Oh the pain the Paine.

Can't get LBWs if you're always bowling too short, as England have been all game.
The penny's not dropping, though...

You don't insert a team, which means you have to bat last, if you are hoping the second new ball will do the damage.

Story of Paine’s career isn’t it? Pretty 50 and then out.

Quite happy with Marsh's crabbing.
Starc out just now to a rubbish ball.
I think Overton has been the pick of the bowlers; he looks a very likely prospect.

He’s probably the closest England have to a McGrath-like bowler-not very quick but gets good bounce, constantly hits the splice, and has a good bouncer.
