Re: Rugby WC 2019
Yeah... took SA until the last 20 minutes of their third WC final to actually score a try in one... and you still haven’t conceded one!
As they say in NFL, defenc(s)e wins championships.

Re: Rugby WC 2019
Well, it looks a bit different, seen from Dublin City. Never gloat in victory, they say, never whine in defeat. Some lamentably do both, alternately. Switching their story, beat their chests to soak up reflected glory (covering evident low self-esteem issues) or else inveigh bitterly against political correctness & quota systems, all depending 100% on what happens on the day.
First of all, hearty congrats to the South African squad and coaching team. They knew exactly what they were doing, and were on it from the start. They brought all their strong points into play - power tackles and drives, de Klerk's wiles, sound placekicking (after one false shot), and late on, speed and sidestepping prowess on the wings. making the match finally appear a romp. They implemented their game plan to perfection.
As for England, it would be nice to say it was only the above-mentioned SAf excellence that stopped them playing. But England also contributed mightily to defeating themselves. On the big day, they pulled out a "2018" performance. As if they'd taken the week off, and turned up for the match in body only. Jangling with nervers, amazing to see after the tournament they'd had. No accuracy at all in the first half. "Passes" flung into empty spaces, dropping the ball unaccountably, weak would-be tackles (oh dear, Ford and Youngs in particular!). They seemed surprised even that Garces was so quick to blow up against them early on, which should have been a really key part of their preparation - to rise above such buffets.
So, through the doing of both squads, easily the better team won on the day.
And so many great, heart-warming stories from the SAf camp. In particular, Kalisi - what an inspiring, modest, skilful & powerful leader! - and Mapimpi.
So let's hope this success brings inspiration, common purpose and progress to the Rainbow Nation - and that even the fair-weather fans give up their blethering about selection biases & blindnesses.
Because all those "quota" players didn't serve the Boks too badly, eh?
Well played, South Africa! May you flourish from here!
(And to the England squad and set-up, congrats on an outstanding tournament, bar one badly misfiring day.)

Re: Rugby WC 2019
So, Peter, what’s your prediction for the England XV that will beat France 21-15 in the final in Paris in four years’ time (England having got revenge on the Boks in the semis, with the hosts taking care of the All Blacks)? At least half of this lot should still be around, but I don’t really know a lot of the young prospects...

Englands scrum was totally dismantled by the boks & that was the difference. Well deserved win in the end.
Re: Rugby WC 2019
SA tore us a new one. They did to us what we did to the All Blacks.

taips - if you really dislike Peter so much, and don't enjoy his posts, can you just not engage with him, instead of sniping and baiting? Your posts above seem gratuitously offensive; just enjoy the win, please.
I don't understand or enjoy rugby (union) but I'm pleased for the South African nation that they won an important sporting tournament, and I agree with others above that it's significant and encouraging that this has been achieved in an era of increased African participation in what was once the White Man's game.

Well the RFDS is all the better for it and it's always nice when you're right about skewed odds. As for Jones coming back to Australia. I like the way his team's play but his style of mgt might suit England or SA but will probably prove as problematic this time around.
We also need to start breeding forwards. Like our racing industry which will prove yet again on Tuesday we prefer flash over substance.

Just import your forwards from the Pacific Islands like everyone else does... I expect you already do to an extent, so it must be the scouting that’s behind!

Re: Rugby WC 2019
Everyone else probably pay them more. We seem to have this attitude that backs are worth a fortune despite the fact that if they're blown by the time, and if, they get into the opposition half they're worth not a brass razoo. If teams just bring one thing out of last night it's the most important two people in the squad are the tight head prop and reserve tight head prop.

Re: Rugby WC 2019
Scrummaging has always seemed a weakness for the Wobblies, even when you were more prominent... Australia always seem to prefer multi-skilled forwards (I mean, John Eales even kicked goals!) and I guess the rest of the world has caught up in that regard without sacrificing the set piece too much.

Totally agree. (no prizes for guessing which position i played)
Re: Rugby WC 2019
Fly half and hidden away at fullback in the firsts (you could get away with that back in the day). Magic left foot being the only reason I got a run in the firsts.

England copping heaps for refusing to wear their runners up medals. Along with the Haka incident they seem to be going out of their way to offend everyone.

Apparantly* they also refused to applaud the referee.

Yeah like you can blame the ref for dropped hall and a farked up scrum, just to name two things.

There’s nothing in the laws of the game that says you have to do that... as long as you don’t punch him, you’ve done nothing wrong.taipan wrote:Big Dog wrote:England copping heaps for refusing to wear their runners up medals. I’m sure “Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser” features in Eddie Jones’s phrase bank
