Try Avatar:the last airbender. Childish (runs on Nickelodeon), but absorbing storyline, and as good a fantasy as I've read.

Carnivale is a really weird series from HBO about a boy who joins a travelling circus and has a talent which can be used for good or evil

Really difficult to explain the genre of this... here's the trailer anyhow

The Wire - how do you not know about it!!?

Synopsis from IMDB

Set in Baltimore, this show centers around the city's inner-city drug scene. It starts as mid-level drug dealer, D'Angelo Barksdale beats a murder rap. After a conversation with a judge, Det. James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team, in order to bring down drug kingpin Avon Barksdale. Avon Barksdale, accompanied by his right-hand man Stringer Bell, enforcer Wee-Bey and many lieutenants (including his own nephew, D'Angelo Barksdale), has to deal with law enforcement, informants in his own camp, and competition with a local rival, Omar, who's been robbing Barksdale's dealers and reselling the drugs. The supervisor of the investigation, Lt. Cedric Daniels, has to deal with his own problems, such as a corrupt bureaucracy, some of his detectives beating suspects, hard-headed but determined Det. McNulty, and a blackmailing deputy. The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug "food chain", from junkies to dealers, and from cops to politicians

Got some great characters throughout the series...

Deadwood is like Sopranos set in the wild west, spawned one of the best villains of all time with copious amounts of use of swearing and the word 'cocksucker'

The Wire is brilliant, just finished series 3. Watched it after working my way through the Sopranos and didn't think anything could top that but the Wire might just have done it.

Considering that I can barely understand Japanese TV, I've been watching a lot of old British comedies on youtube since I arrived in Tokyo - Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Allo Allo, Dad's Army......

Dexter. It's aces. And easy to start with from scratch as - although the third season has just begun - the seasons are only ten (or is it twelve?) high-quality episodes long, so you'll be all caught up in no time.

Heroes has always been disappointing to me. Too many threads happening for anything particularly interesting to happen in any one episode. It's a bit like reading a Robert Jordan book.

Stick with the Wire - first season really builds the characters up, gets going later on

It's oddly comforting to know that everyone's favourite, cuddly serial killer is still on form.

Deb's still annoying to the nth degree, though. When's he going to chop her up?

NBC are supposedly the butt of many jokes in American TV land for their inability to make TV shows. Heroes is kind of an example of that: a good initial idea, some decent early "buzz" and interest surrounding it, followed by a complete mess of muddled story-lines and re-heated (or totally stolen) scenes from better sci-fi series and movies - not to mention the constant promises to "the fans" to do better and learn from their mistakes.

The Suresh storyline that has started the current series isn't just a nod-and-a-wink to The Fly, it's almost a word-for-word, shot-by-shot remake.

It's very watchable, but doesn't feel remotely like a quality, intelligently-plotted series. It's more like an extended advert. I wonder when the action figures will come out...
