Krejza vows to put South Africa in a spin
Wouldn't they be spewing if he took bags against them, just when the Warne threat disappears.
Krejza vows to spin trouble for South Africa
December 3, 2008
INJURED spinner Jason Krejza has declared he will be fit to exploit South Africa's "weakness" against spin in the first Test in Perth.
Krejza, who was ruled out of the final Test against New Zealand after twisting his ankle at Adelaide Oval during a practice session, will resume light running today and could play in Tasmania's one-day match against NSW on Sunday in a bid to prove his fitness.
South Africa has been known to struggle against slow bowlers, which was noted by Krejza, who took 12 wickets on debut against India last month.
"That is something I have obviously been looking at and I'm hoping to bring that weakness out if I get that opportunity," Krejza said. "I see my role as taking wickets and containing."
Australian coach Tim Nielsen said he would prefer to use a specialist spinner at the WACA Ground despite predictions of an ultra-fast wicket, and Krejza remains the preferred candidate ahead of Nathan Hauritz, who replaced him in Adelaide and picked up four wickets.
The Proteas most recently destroyed Bangladesh in a two-Test series but even then found spin a challenge — left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan took 6-99 in the second Test — while they have traditionally stumbled in Australian conditions against Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill.
Australia made the bold choice of playing four quicks in Perth against India last summer and suffered a shock loss, and Nielsen is not keen to repeat that mistake despite WACA curator Cameron Sutherland using a relaid pitch from last year's Twenty20 match against New Zealand that oozed pace.
After that loss to India Australian skipper Ricky Ponting hinted that he was duped into thinking the pitch would suit four quicks, but Sutherland hit back yesterday.
"I didn't have any communication with Ricky in the lead-up to the Test. Ricky spoke to other players but that's about it," Sutherland said.
"We wanted more pace than what we got. Forty wickets fell in four days and Australia had India 5-125 in the second innings so there was something there for bowlers if you want to bend your back.
"We've had really good cricket wickets for the (Sheffield) Shield games, there's been certainly plenty of bounce in them and they've carried through pretty well … but at the same time a good quality spinner at the WACA will always take wickets."
Krejza was crestfallen after the injury ruled him out of what would have been his first Test in Australia.
"Once (the injury) happened I was very, very frustrated. It was a little thing that happened. I haven't gone over on my ankle since I was eight years old so it was very disappointing," he said.
"But it is coming along really well. I should get a game for Tassie and I think I should be back in time (for Perth).
"I definitely want to be the No. 1 spin bowler in the country. I have a lot of hard work to do and lot more Tests to play to be confident in saying that."

South Africa's weakness against spin is a myth. They had a weakness against Warne, but not spinners in general, as evidenced by their good record in India.
Krejza will be exposed for being the club bowler that he is on Australian pitches.
