International Rock XI Empty International Rock XI

Post by DJ_Smerk Tue 27 Jan 2009, 11:00

By Rock I don't mean Rock Stars, keep your Whitesnake and Van Halen for another thread. I mean on the basis of who in International XI's is the rock which holds the batting order together when in total devastation. Obviously bowlers will be a bit harder to come by, but in recent times, Steve Harmison has sort of been Englands "Rock" in the lower order. (England Batting in Crisis).

Owen Rock - an outstanding FC batting average of 94.75. He's your opening bat.

Atherton would definitely be part of the Rock XI.

Not sure what Wicket keeper though? Russell?

Didn't see Lawry play, all I know is he's got the reputation of being the Aussie Boycott.

Gooch after 1990 was basically England. If you got him we were fooked. Avergaed something like 58 after 1990 - don't think the Aussies ever really saw the best of him.

The Aussies memory of Gooch is his pair on debut, him dropping himself in 89 because Alderman kept making himself look silly and his handled ball off Merv in 93. I should probably add his 196 in 85 when and Englishman being deprived of a key milestone was about the only good thing that happened in the last 4 tests.

In fairness though, when we were playing England in the 90s I used to think that once we got Gooch out it was all over.

Yeah, in 1989 his game was shot before he even played in the Ashes. Don't think he was very prolific in FC cricket either by his own standards.

He had the best record of anyone English against the WI in their pomp. They hold him in very high regard. His 153* at Headingley in 1991 remains the best innings i've ever seen ball by ball

I think AB, Gooch, Crowe and Deano were the only batsmen to average more than 40 against the Windies in the 80s (min 1000 runs I think).

I'll nominate Gavaskar, John Edrich, Redpath, and Andy Flower in their eras.

Andy Flower probably gets the keeper's spot IMO.
