Hopes vs Watson(odi)
I know hopes isn't anything special but for my money he's still a better bet than watson in the shorter form of the game.
You pretty much know you will get 8-10 overs a game from him at a decent rate and a few runs here and there if the top order fails.
Most important part is he seems more in the bichel mode in that he hardly seems to get injured.

Well he's able to stay on the field for more than 5 overs which is a start.

True, but i'm stuffed if i know how he got a yellow shirt in the first place, although, i guess he is marginally better than Hodge.
Re: Hopes vs Watson(odi)
All-rounder v batsman?
As I said months ago, Watson will be a good bat for Australia, but will bowl rarely. Maybe a bit more often than Damien Martyn, but not much, if he's any sense.

Agree . . . for all the crap he gets, still think Watson is a very useful cricketer.

Hopes goes OK. And as much as I rarely agree with Chappelli, I can't see the selectors risking Watto until he has many months of proven fitness and resilience under his belt.

Pretty much his main selling point over watson.
Im sure watson could do more than hopes but if he's never fit then it means nothing.

James Hopes looks like the next Ian Harvey to me. Ie not very good. Ok with bat and ball but not really excellent with either.

Re: Hopes vs Watson(odi)
As a 12 month stop gap i think he will be alright.
Games changed as well since harvey was in the side, harvey only went for 4.5-5 an over but back then that wasn't good enough without taking wickets now a 5th bowler who goes for 5 an over is about par.

Tests i agree 100%, hopes will never get close to the test team.
But i just can't see watson playing one dayers as a batsman only, not with the current one day batting talent we have.

Re: Hopes vs Watson(odi)
Remember when we used to have Harvey v Shane Lee v Moods... those were the days.
I don't think it matters which of them we play, but as has been pointed out above Hopes will probably be available more often than Watto, so if we want a consistent side maybe we should stick with him.

My main issue with that is that Hopes is actually quite sh1t. If we are going to go with a bitza I would stick with YT.

Hopes has been okay. A run-a-ball strike rate & averaging over twenty despite coming in around number 7 or 8. He has been involved in some very useful partnerships so far in his ODI career. He also has an economy rate below five with the ball which is acceptable, particularly considering he took a hammering from Jayasuriya in one match. I think a few people have decided he can't bowl based solely on that one innings but Jayasuriya has smashed some of the world's best bowlers around the park.
A piece of trivia - So far in his ODI career, Hopes has been dismissed 6 times & 5 of those have happened in the 50th over. Could have been averaging over 100 if he could have got off strike in the final over.

Re: Hopes vs Watson(odi)
Hopes is better now than he was a few years ago.
On his day and given time he can score runs in shield cricket and is difficult to dismiss. A gutsy player.
Following up on Lardbucket's theory has Watson been injured while batting?

End of over 40 (15 runs) - India 202/2 (RR: 5.05)
MS Dhoni
15* (12b 2x4)
JR Hopes
7-0-36-2
SR Tendulkar
74* (114b 6x4)
MG Johnson
7-0-37-0
39.6
Hopes to Dhoni, FOUR, Lemon cut. Full and outside off, Dhoni is late in getting forward, lunges at it and gets a inside edge past the stumps.
39.5
Hopes to Dhoni, FOUR, Whack. Fullish, outside off stump, Dhoni stood and delivered. Violence. He biffed it across the line and the ball sped to the long-on boundary
39.4
Hopes to Tendulkar, 1 run, punches a length delivery to deep cover
39.3
Hopes to Tendulkar, FOUR, Cheeky paddle sweep. He first shuffled outside leg stump and then moved right across the stumps to paddle a low full toss to fine leg boundary
39.2
Hopes to Tendulkar, no run, kept low that time, outside off and Tendulkar tries to swish across the line but the lack of bounce does in for him
39.1
Hopes to Tendulkar, 2 runs, full and wide off off, Tendulkar backs away again and gets the placement this time to complete a quick couple

I should put it on the record that I would prefer Hopes to Hodge at the moment.
