Back to the future with Tres?
Dunno if this has been posted. [awaits Red's "I've already posted this"]
Tres ready for recall
"Marcus Trescothick could be talked out of international retirement in a bid to bolster England's batting at the Oval next week for their Ashes decider against Australia, according to his Somerset boss."

Re: Back to the future with Tres?
I think it's unfair and unreasonable to use emotional blackmail ("Your country needs you" etc) on a player who stood down from international cricket for good reason.
People should have more respect for him.

Re: Back to the future with Tres?
Hmmm he was struggling with the pressures of Test Cricket when he stood down, what is going to be any different now.

He might score 12 runs more than Bell.

Yes, but I might score 12 more runs that Bell. None of you are calling for me to play. Why is that? You evil, nasty people. You have it in for me, don't you? You won't back me to replace Bell. I hate you all.

It's an interesting one.
Do you go with the one most likely to score runs or a player of the future? One can clearly argue the future doesn't matter a toss in this one-off at The Oval.

He's had 2 and a half years for his mental stste to improve, and depression is by no means incurable. His own medical people would have OKed the process at every turn.
I'm happy to treat any Tres comeback as a good news story at this stage.

Most likely to score runs I'd say Skulls.

I guess a team without McGrath and Warne would make any opening English bat less depressed.

Re: Back to the future with Tres?
It's not going to happen, too good to be true.
Though of course if Ramps was a one off pick, then I don't see why Tres shouldn't be granted that.
And this is extremely sage...
Of course his record v Aus isn't as hot as that but in 2005 he did get us off to some top starts.
I don't think we'll go the 'one-off' route with either Ramps or Tres tbh.

While cases have also been made for Mark Ramprakash and Robert Key to
be recalled, the 33-year-old Trescothick's Test record, of 5,825 runs
from 76 matches at an average of 43.79 with 14 hundreds, is markedly
superior to that of his fellow former England batsmen.

Next in line seems to be Trott. If there's consistency, he would seem the logical choice having called him up for the last Test.
I'd love to see Tres play, I'd love him to still be playing. It's just that I think his decision should be respected.

Well, Trott seems to tick both the "Man for the job now" and "Man for the job in the future" boxes.

Not forgetting the "Must have a South African in the team" box.

Re: Back to the future with Tres?
No. Just another thread to dig Cook in the ribs. After Lord's it would've seemed madness, though I'm not adverse to ragging apparent 'in form' players. After two boring, crabby, unharmful 30s wherein he then waftily nicked off - the story of his career.
Re: Back to the future with Tres?
The bit that frustrates me about Cook is that he's had this problem since he started, but hasn't seemed able to correct it - or at least minimise it.
