Fair play to Ricky Ponting
Whatever is said about his 'spirit of the game' remarks, poor captaincy, and often unlikeable on field persona, he is always gracious in defeat in the post match interviews, and dare I say it, he even comes across as likeable. Fair play to him.

Damn straight. And it's amazing how nice Mudge can be when his side has just won the most coveted of all cricket trophies.

Re: Fair play to Ricky Ponting
While The Ashes is very important, I believe it only just edges other tours. I don't believe that there should be daylight between The Ashes and other series'. (From all other Test nations, not just England and Australia).
While it was excellent to beat those pesky Australian's, I still believe that there should be an equal focus on every series we go into. SAF, Ind, Sri and Pak at home are four of the most difficult teams to play home or away (when they get it right). I'd be happy beating any of them. If we beat all four of them and not Aus, we'd still have time somewhere down the line to make amends as Cricket is played more often and a series Down Under seems to come round much quicker than normal. There will always be time to beat Australia.
Beating Aus is amazing, but not everything considering there's 6-7 other nations out there to beat. Thankfully my opinion isn't really counted around here, so no-one will pay attention to this.

I would rather lose every test series over a two year period and then win the ashes than win every test series over a 2 year period but lose the ashes.DJ_Smerk wrote:While The Ashes is very important, I believe it only just edges other tours. Are you young smerkles?
I would think that any Brit that had to endure the 90s and any Aus the 80s would disagree with the above sentiment

Re: Fair play to Ricky Ponting
I've seen The Series of Four Captains, I've seen '81, 1997, 2001, 2002/03, 2005, 2006/07 and 2009.
While I agree with what you say, it is all in the past. Did you not think that England would ever get back to the peak of Cricket? It was only a matter of time.
I'm 22 in a few weeks.
Personally, I'm a fan of Cricket Past and Present regardless of the result. Except sometimes I cringe at the decisions our batsmen or others have made in losing causes.

I was kinda hoping the wouldn't
For me it is the past that makes the Ashes so grouse
But I see your point that the most important series should be the current (or next) one regardless of who against. (Unless it's NZ or Bangledesh)

Re: Fair play to Ricky Ponting
Australia is the biggest series by miles because Australia have been the world's best team for the last 20 years. Thus, beating Australia was always going to be the greatest achievement. Go back to the mid-eighties and although the Ashes were massive, the West Indies was the greater challenge (although getting repeatedly utterly stuffed means that "challenge" isn't exactly the word).
I don't doubt that through the nineties and first half of the noughties, although beating England was special because of the Ashes, the matches away to India (for example) were the bigger challenge. That's the way it goes.
