My only regret is that England missed a good chance to win all 6 in 78/79.

Australian 2nd XI, I think you mean. England lost 8 straight Ashes Tests home and away in 1920-21 to the "Big Ship's" side, a so far unequalled record, but the two series were not really comparable as the 1920-1 series in Australia, which Australia won 5-0, was timeless whereas the 1921 series in England, which Australia won 3-0, was restricted to 3 days with no allowance made for loss of time due to bad weather (the 4th Test at Old Trafford, for example, which was drawn, was restricted to 2 days after the first day's play was washed out). The Invincibles might have had a 5-0 Ashes victory in 1948 if rain had not intervened, again, at Old Trafford. Australia have had 2 Ashes 5-0 whitewashes England have had....?? Last home series which Australia did not win a single Test but England won more than 1 was... ??

Regarding Old Trafford in 1948, England scored 363 and 174-3 dec. Australia 221 and 92-1. I think the weather denied England on that occasion.
Between the 5th test in 1884/1885 and the 2nd test of the 1890 series England won 11 out of 12 Ashes tests Australia. This beats Australia's 11 out of 13 from 1921 to 1925 and England's 8 out of 10 in 1977 and 1978/79.
Ashes series where a team has not lost a test and won more that 1:
AUS in ENG 1921, 1948, 1989
AUS in AUS 1920/21, 1946/47, 1958/59, 1990/91, 2006/07
ENG in ENG 1886, 1890, 1905, 1977
ENG in AUS 1886/87, 1970/71
Eight to six in Australia's favour (plus the 79/80 series of course).

And of course, England is also the reigning 1966 Soccer WC champions.
Fat lot of f*cking good living in the past does you.
The shameful part of that series for England was that Australia actually won a Test at all with the shit team we had left.

You're right, instead of dwelling on past glories we should really look to the present. So:Zat wrote:And of course, England is also the reigning 1966 Soccer WC champions.

Reckon so skully. I note he's online at the moment.
Wonder if his mum knows he's on the PC at this hour. He should be in bed by now, after all, it's school in the morning.

I'm logging off now though. Only because I WANT to of course. I'm allowed to stay up as long as I like (even when it is schoo...erm..work tomorrow). Anyway I'm going to read under the bed-clothes with my torch.

Except that Morris (54*) and Bradman (30*), who put on 301 for the 2nd wicket in the 4th innings of the next Test at Headingley, were the not out batsmen with only a modest 225 left to get.

Or to put it another way, 4 more than their team's entire first innings total.
