Major League Baseball playoffs
For anyone interested.
Cardinals "do a St George" and go out in straight sets having dominated the regular season in the NL.
Matt Holliday's blunder in game 2 will no doubt haunt him for the rest of his life.

And now 3 games off as Paplebon blows a save and concedes his first ever post season RBI.

Bump a year down the track as the SF Giants are two innings away from their first World Series in over 50 years.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
Well done to the Giants.
And the new-look MLB-funded Australian Baseball League starts this Saturday. 6 teams, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra taking part.
Tickets are as cheap as all get out, and the Sydney Blue Sox have reportedly sold out of season tickets, and other teams have also reported strong sales.

I hope they approach this a bit better than they did back in the nineties when they seemed to tackle cricket head on instead of trying to find a niche when sports fans will watch it.

......... and how silly are the Americans? Holding a World Series game on Melbourne Cup day!
Yes, I know that strictly speaking they were on different days.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
The other problem the old ABL had was that each of the teams was privately owned, and the wages for the players kept shooting skywards, eventually becomeing unsustainable. This time around the comp, the clubs, the whole box and dice will be owned by the ABL (75% MLB, 25% ABF) for at least five years, and salaries will, to a large extent, be decided by the ABL, meaning no one club should be able to put itself into hockl to try buying success.WideWally wrote:I hope they approach this a bit better than they did back in the nineties when they seemed to tackle cricket head on instead of trying to find a niche when sports fans will watch it.

You mean the closer Wilson?
The starter, Tim Lincecum - "Big Time Timmy Jam" of ESPN ad fame - looks like he's about 15 and doesn't shave.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
A wild last day of the regular season saw the Red Sox and Braves complete their self-destruction during September and miss out on playoff spots.
The Braves blew a 3-1 lead against the Phillies who played their second team for most of the game. The Cards easily won their game so they are straight through to play the Phillies in the first round.
The Sox blew a 3-1 lead to the Orioles, including their star closer Papelbon giving up 2 runs in the 9th.
But the funniest result was the Rays coming back from 7-0 down in the 8th v the Yankees to win. Literally in the space of 10 minutes the Red Sox went from straight into the playoffs to straight out. As a Yankees fan it was the happiest loss I can remember.
Good times.

Probably should have added that the Braves had an 8.5 game lead for the laset playoff spot at the start of September; the Red Sox had a 9 game lead.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
Given that the result of that match made no difference to the Yanks (I think) is it possible they decided to f*ck the Red Sox over by throwing the game? But the funniest result was the Rays coming back from 7-0 down in the 8th v the Yankees to win. Apparently not. The mlb.com report of the match says the Yanks game went into extra innings while the Sox were leading the Orioles before collapsing. Again.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
I was hoping that the Yanks would throw it but Teixera hit a grand slam in the first innings which seemed to suggest they were trying.
They didn't use Riviera in the 9th to save the game though which might indicate that they were indifferent at that stage.

Re: Major League Baseball playoffs
Just been watching the wrap up on ESPN. Unbelievable stuff to close the regular season.
And equally as unbelieveable, on the 'Top 10' for the day, Sportcenter had, at #10, on a night of huge drama across the world of baseball, Dave Warner's diving catch for NSW against T&T in the T20 moneyfest. 'No glove needed here...'

Wasn't anything special. Regulation running in from the outfield, diving forward to take the catch about a foot off the grass.
But 'NO GLOVE!!!'

Awful. Mind you, the Sox lost 9-0 to the Yankees last weekend, no? Something like that. Not a fan of the Rays at all. Cannot believe that result! Had some awesome moments in the season but serious self destruct at the end.
