Racism and the ridiculous thoughts of individuals Empty Racism and the ridiculous thoughts of individuals

Post by DJ_Smerk Tue 10 Nov 2009, 22:12

Just had a brief discussion about racism where I live. My flatmate reckons calling a person a 'Monkey' is not a racist term.

Also, apparently 'half-cast' is still allowed?

Either people are severely uneducated or severely stupid.

It's quite unbelievable some of the things people say.

I have to admit smerky I had no idea 'paki' was a racist term - I treated as I do 'Aussie' - just an abbreviation. And I said it several times throughout the UK. Racism and the ridiculous thoughts of individuals Fresse Racism and the ridiculous thoughts of individuals Icon_redface

I guess we act on the understanding we have at a particular time.

In Afrikaans calling someone a baboon was identical to saying "you fool" when they'd done something stupid, and had no racial connotation at all. Then, when the ANC came to power in 1994, the use of the insult was outlawed in Parliament. If ever there was a better way of issuing an open invitation to racists... Rolling Eyes

It seems the uakari, a pink-faced South American monkey, got its name from a native word for "white man". I don't feel particularly insulted.

Which would you be more offended by Smerky, if I chose to call you:

a) a cheeky monkey, or;

b) a stinking, flea-infested, gibbering monkey (accompanied by inane armpit scratching movements and monkey noises)?

I think it's about the tone, context and intent.

this is a peculiarly caucasian behaviour.

they will go the extra mile to prove that the 'other' doesn't exist.

sadly western govts for all their claims of being anti-racist also condone and encourage this behaviour by promoting a steady stream of racial undercurrent in their media and govt/police policies.

It seems pretty common for Indians to refer to SRT as a "monkey-faced dwarf" . . . as Indians are not racist, obviously monkey isn't always a racist term . . .

Indeed, monkey is such a common epithet used on most Indian cricket forums that it's hard to believe that Harbi used anything but that term to Roy . . . still, hardly racist as we know that Indians just aren't racist . . .
