Pink Balls RIP. Next, a return to Orange?
News Ltd story
So it seems the pink ball will not go the distance. Some bloke from Duke is saying fluoro orange may be the way to go. Of course, cricket fans with a few years of memories may recall fluoro orange balls being tried in the Sheffield Shield. And not doing very well.
In the article linked to, Robert Craddock wrote:The pink Dukes balls did not get high marks at Allan Border Field because players found "bits" of paint came off to reveal a white cover beneath.
Some of the balls also went out of shape and were impossible to shine.
The consensus among many Border Field observers was that painted balls are not suitable and, until a dyed pink leather capable of lasting 80 overs can be developed, the experiment does not have a genuine chance of success.
So it seems the pink ball will not go the distance. Some bloke from Duke is saying fluoro orange may be the way to go. Of course, cricket fans with a few years of memories may recall fluoro orange balls being tried in the Sheffield Shield. And not doing very well.

"The only colour you can properly dye leather is red," he said. "If you want a bright-coloured ball, you are going to have to put up with white underneath it."
1.Why are white balls so useless then?
2.Add some white dye to the red dye ...you get pink dye
3. Replace the white ball all the time ...like baseball does
4. Forget about night play
5. Give them the orange balls and give the bowlers some advantage

It doesn't seem that hard to dye the leather any colour you like...

Is there a difference between the leather used for couches and the leather used for cricket balls?tac wrote:If you want a couch maybe . . .
Maybe the leather used for couches is a vegetable substitute made from potatoes and not really leather at all.

Is there a difference between the leather used for cricket balls, the leather used for couches, and the leather gimp mask Bucky wears?

We've tried Orange balls here too about 20 years ago in our 40 over cricket. Scores were generally down.

Well if you want to keep scores down and counter the effect of these runway-like pitches, make the ball black with black stitching.
Of course, there will also not be any catches taken...

Re: Pink Balls RIP. Next, a return to Orange?
Pakistan has resurrected the orange ball, playing the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy under lights over five days. The match concludes later today.
I have only been able to find scant coverage of the match, and very little comment on the ball.
One article I stumbled across - which I have been unable to locate a second time to verify my recolection - said that the main problem with the pink balls used in the past couple of seasons on a 'trial' basis was that they didn't hold their shape, but did keep their colour.
Anyhoo, here's a pic from cricinfo of the ball in action.

Re: Pink Balls RIP. Next, a return to Orange?
We had an orange ball in a short lived tournament in England called the Refuge Assurance 40 over Cup in 1988 and 1989. Can't remember too many complaints apart from it did a bit.

From the Shield games back in the day, the players complained the orange ball left a bit of a comet when bowled (under lights).

Replace the white ball all the time ...like baseball does
That's always been the answer, but do night time tests really have appeal?

Heh, I posted the same 8 months ago exactly 2 posts above mine. Eejit, I blame the big offputting picture of Danish Kaneria with Pink balls.

Except the ball in the picture of Kaneria is orange, not pink...
