I reckon only Merls is a champagne quoffer.
She's from Yorkshire. Anyone who owns their own shoes is considered middle class up t'there.
It makes the shining business bloody difficult I can tell you.

Hanson misunderstood? Or Woman's Day lies?
Wouldn't be the first time that's happened in either case.

One of the vets at work, who's intelligent and you'd think was reasonably streetwise, actually said he didn't think there was anybody didn't have a credit card now a days...
How do you deal with that?
Passionate and laudable Ange, though I'm sure not entirely true about the middle class soft comfort bit!
Time spent with the underpriviledged through organisations like Round Table, Rotary and various charities does tend to sharpen one's outlook on those that are less "well off" which leads to both understanding and assisting. I reccommend it!
And whilst I admit freely to Lever's assertion that I enjoy a drop of bubbly, that in itself does not preclude from appreciating one's luck in life when associating with and meeting and assisting the less well off in our society. And trust me, there are many of those 'soft midlle classes' out there who get on with it without seeking any form of recognition.
Re your vet's comment - intelligence does not always go with being streetwise. You deal with his ignorance by making sure he's made wise to the fact that not everyone owns plastic - though there are some out there who do and haven't the first idea of how to deal with debt. The blame for that lies squarely with the Banks and daytime TV advertisements with Michael Parkinson leading from the front - who make large amounts of credit freely available and attractive to those who cannot, for whatever reason, strive to repay what they spend. Society as a whole, must also take the blame - the "keeping up with the Jones's" factor is still predominant, moreso today, despite the struggling economy. But in general, I have found that the most proud, prudent, sensible and caring person will be found in your "lower parts of society" ( not a phrase I'd associate with the lesser priviledged, as it sounds demeaning) - especially the matriarch.
As for Nick Griffin - he's nothing but a headline seeking prat whose outpourings ought to be publicised more often if only to make him look the illogical fool and rabid racist that he is.
Okay - soapbox put away!

Anyway, Ben Elton is emigrating to Oz - I think the Aussies have got the better of that little deal.

Good riddance to him. Mind you, it's ironic he's gone to escape nanny-state meddling. He's in for a shock.

Re: Watch out , Poms ....
Does anyone remembeer Harry Enfield's "Benny Elton" sketch?
Prescient!
I thought of it as a bit of an easy target at the time, but if Elt was a bit too moralisingly right-on to start with (Harry Enfield's main thrust), he has turned into more and more of a self-righteous self-perpetuating smartarsehole ever since.
