Allan D and other statistics boffins...
The India/South Africa 2nd test produced some pretty strange statistics. I wondered...
How many times has a team that lost a test by an innings won the next in the same series by a similar margin (and vice versa, of course)?
How many times, in an innings defeat
* Has a member of the losing team scored a century in each innings?
* Has the losing team scored three (or more) individual centuries in the match?

Sadly, work interferes with my attempts to read every thread right through, and the search function on FB is as crap as ever.

Ask for overtime so you can read the forum. I'm sure they'll understand.

Of the previous 66 instances in Tests where a batsman has made a century in each innings 8 have been in a losing cause, of these 2 have been in an innings defeat. They are as follows:
1) V.S.Hazare who made 116 & 145 for India v. Australia at the Adelaide Oval in January 1948 when Australia won by an innings and 16 runs.
2) C.L.Walcott who made 155 & 110 for the West Indies also against Australia at Sabina Park in June 1955 when Australia won by an innings and 82 runs.
The remaining 6 instances of a player scoring a century in each innings in a losing cause are as follows:
1) H.Sutcliffe 176 & 127 v. Australia at the MCG, January 1925 (lost by 81 runs)
2) G.A.Headley 106 & 107 v. England at The Oval, August 1939 (lost by 8 wickets).
3) S.M.Gavaskar 111 & 137 v. Pakistan at Karachi, November 1978 (lost by 8 wickets).
4) A.Flower 142 & 199 v. South Africa at Harare, September 2001 (lost by 9 wickets)
5) B.C. Lara 221 & 130 v. Sri Lanka at Colombo, November 2001 (lost by 10 wickets)
6) A.J.Strauss 123 & 108 v. India at Chennai, December 2008 (lost by 6 wickets).

Re: Allan D and other statistics boffins...
The record number of centurions in a losing side is 4 and is held by Australia in the 3rd Test v. England at the MCG over the New Year period in 1928-9 when A.F.Kippax made 100 and J.Ryder 112 in the 1st innings and W.M.Woodfull 107 and D.G.Bradman 112 in the 2nd innings but still lost by 3 wickets.
There have been at least 2 other instances of a side containing 3 century-makers and going on to lose. These are:
1) England (J.B.Hobbs 115 - 1st innings - H.Sutcliffe 115 & F.E.Woolley 123 - 2nd innings) v. Australia at the SCG - December 1924 (lost by 193 runs).
2) India (V.S.Hazare 116 & D.G.Phadkar 123 - 1st innings - V.S.Hazare 145 - 2nd innings) v. Australia at the Adelaide Oval - January 1948 (lost by an innings & 16 runs).
