Adelaide Oval re development- A travesty
This may have already been discussed, but turning Adelaide Oval into yet another 50,000 seater concrete jungle by 2014 will be a disaster for Australian cricket. All to accomodate the AFL, I assume?
It's the one Australian ground left that still has some beauty and character. Now, all will be lost.

It was alluded to with the drop-in pitches the other day. I read yesterday though that the grass mound and trees will eventually go turning it into yet another homogenised Aussie venue.

Still, no church towers, no serenity, no feeling of a quaint, country cricket ground.
Can't they just build a big monstrosity elsewhere and leave Adelaide Oval as it is? Every ground is slowly becoming the same. There is no character or distinctiveness left.

And play Adelaide's international matches at a stadium that can hold 50 000 people. In Sydney perhaps...Henry wrote:Can't they just build a big monstrosity elsewhere and leave Adelaide Oval as it is?

Where do Adelaide play now? AAMI Stadium? Just upgrade that FFS.

Nothing. Adelaide is a smallish city, and not all the games at Adelaide Oval are sold out, anyway. What's the capacity now? 25,000? Plenty for Adelaide, and still bigger than most cricket grounds in England bar Lord's and perhaps the Oval.

State and Federal govts dont want to give money to single use sports facilities
So they tell Football and Cricket to join up if they want to get govt money for new sporting stadia
Melbourne Sydney and Brisbane are fine because their grounds are already shared.
The problem comes in Perth and Adelaide where you need to build stadiums of 50 to 60 thousand capacity for AFL and about 10 thousand for cricket .
Perth also had the added complication of the consultant wanting the stadium to be convertible for soccer and rugby too

Are they gonna make the square boundaries further away from the centre pitch than the current 40 metres?

Re: Adelaide Oval re development- A travesty
The South Australian Liberals had a much better proposal, but they lost the election.
They proposed keeping the Adelaide Oval as a cricket ground.
Much of the land around Football Park (AAMI Stadium) would then be sold off to help finance a new multi-purpose venue in the city. This venue would have a 50K capacity and moveable seats to accomodate both Aussie Rules and any major events for the rectangular codes.
It's a shame this plan is now in the dustbin.

So a new stadium for football, and cricket would have stayed at the Adelaide Oval. What was their answer for the cricket matches that do sell out the Oval?Hass wrote:The South Australian Liberals had a much better proposal, but they lost the election.

A drop-in pitch at the new stadium a la Etihad in Melbourne and Telstra Stadium in Sydney.
It wouldn't be needed very often ie. the odd T20 game.
As for Test matches, you only run into excess demand for the Ashes. I don't think it's worth turning a cricket ground into a stadium for the sake of three or four days every four years. Cricket still needs to be played there at other times and it should have a ground of suitable size that suit's the game's character.

nothing said here on this for a while, but I have to say that I am horrified by the prospect of the Adelaide Oval being consumed by AFL and Adelaide's two shitey teams.

The Adelaide Oval is an iconic ground - use it for other sports if you must, but cricket must stay as it's core event.

No doubting the AFL's reputation as a predatory body. Their propaganda machine convinces fans etc. that cricket doesn't deserve its pitches, dedicated grounds or exclusive rights. I like Aussie rules but hate how it devours everything in its range and assumes that it's the world's greatest sport.
