George close to debut

"Peter George has edged closer to a baggy green for Australia as injured paceman Ben Hilfenhaus continues to race the clock ahead of the second Test against Pakistan.

Australia have given the strongest indication yet that Hilfenhaus is unlikely to overcome a left shoulder with Clint McKay called into the squad as cover.

Hilfenhaus injured his shoulder diving for a ball on the fourth and final day of Australia's 150-run opening Test win at Lord's on Friday.

If the Tasmania quick is unable to play, tall South Australia seamer George is set to make his Test debut in the match starting on Wednesday at Headingley.

A team spokesman said that Hilfenhaus's shoulder was showing signs of improvement.

"(Team physiotherapist) Alex Kountouris has been working with Ben Hilfenhaus for the past 24 hours, he reported he has a sore shoulder from the incident in the Test match but that he was a bit better this morning," the spokesman said."

Shame for Milf. He deserves better luck than that. Good luck to Peter George if he debuts. I guess a debut against the striggling Paksters is not the hardest ask ever.

And FFS, why are they giving Qunt M'Kay another go? Jebus H Crikey, the NSP need shooting. shoot

18 FC matches for 67 wickets at 28.46 with 2 Michelles (BB 8-84) and 1 x 10-fer (11-131). India would snap him up.

What Cricinfo's profile on him says:

"A tall, fast bowler of the McGrath mould, Peter George broke into the South Australian first-class side in 2008-09, after two consistent seasons in Adelaide grade cricket. His debut came in early November when he took 4 for 56 against Tasmania, which was the best first-innings return from a South Australian debutant in ten years. A further five Sheffield Shield matches and a total of 20 wickets at 32.15 capped a satisfying debut season."

Along the lines of Smithy, if he is 60% as good as the man he is being compared to, he should be handy.

There is also a slight doubt about Marcus North who has a stomach upset but that's no reason to miss a test.

From Ninemsn

Quick Peter George and batsman Usman Khawaja are outside chances of making their Test debuts as illness and injury dogged the Australian team's build-up to this week's second Test against Pakistan.

Ben Hilfenhaus is yet to test out his injured left shoulder before the Headingley match while Marcus North sat out training on Monday in Leeds with a stomach upset.

Hilfenhaus injured his shoulder diving in the field on the final day of Australia's 150-run win over Pakistan last week at Lord's.

The Tasmanian swing bowler is on the improve and will be given a final chance to prove his fitness on Tuesday before the match starts on Wednesday morning.

Australian vice captain Michael Clarke said the side was hopeful Hilfenhaus would be right to play.

"I don't think he bowled today, he saw the physio but he is certainly improving, so fingers crossed hopefully he will be right come the first day of the Test match," Clarke said.

North missed a Test in Cape Town last year due to illness but the Australian camp is still confident he will be ready in time for the Leeds game.

If George and Khawaja are selected, it would continue the flow of fresh blood into the Australian Test side in recent times.

Steve Smith and Tim Paine's first games in the baggy green last week at Lord's made it 17 Test debutants in the past two and a half years for the national side.

Call-ups would complete rapid rises for George and Pakistan-born Khawaja, who have only played 18 and 20 first-class matches respectively.

Meanwhile Mike Hussey says the battle for Ashes spots is wiping away any hint of complacency in the Australian side before the Headingley clash.

Pakistan have a fine bowling attack but their feeble batting lineup and the upheaval surrounding Shahid Afridi's brief captaincy stint means Australia are expected to extend their winning run against them to 14 successive wins.

Hussey said the lure of playing in the Ashes series, starting November 25 in Brisbane, helped ensure Australia's players would have their minds on the job this week.

"There is still so much motivation because one it is a Test match for Australia and two, we are getting closer and closer to the Ashes series as well," he said.

"I know all the guys want to be part of that Ashes series so everyone wants to perform in every Test match leading up to that to make sure they are on that team sheet in late November."

Aye, he's no Ian Bell, who'd never let a minor inujury keep him out of a Test.
