The island's still called Great Britain, even if the countries it's made up of are independent...vilkrang wrote:Not for much longer...beamer wrote:Well, it's because it's in Britain... Re: The Commonwealth Games
England storm to victory in the mixed triathlon relay, first time I've seen this event - with four individual medallists making up the team it was perhaps the triathlon equivalent of the Jamaican sprint relay team on the track. Yarpies won the race for silver but what was the Snoozer anchor man doing, dropping back into the pack for tactical reasons when a clear second on the bike, then fading to fifth place on the run...

Re: The Commonwealth Games
I can't quite warm to the Sevens, though I've tried, Lode knows I've tried, over the years.
I get it - rugby fast n lite - but it's just that there's not quite enough structure for me, no real shape or depth. A bit threadbare or something...... Like having 5 a side footie on an outdoor pitch that's too big.
Nines - with a scrum of 3 plus 2 that is not a travesty, with options beyond the "one slip and it's gone" - would be a good fast lighter game. Is it just me?

Aye, that was an enjoyable event to watch. England had class to burn and showed it. Those Brownlee chaps are rather talented.beamer wrote:England storm to victory in the mixed triathlon relay, first time I've seen this event - with four individual medallists making up the team it was perhaps the triathlon equivalent of the Jamaican sprint relay team on the track. Worse than the winking Kangaroo from Brisbane?
BD is still bitter that they left Tasmania off the map of Oz in that opening ceremony.
Don't look now but they've left us off the swimming cossie pattern this time as well.
There is ALWAYS a map of Tassie on the swimming cossie.
Sometimes they add a map of Australia!

I don't suppose you saw Usain bolt's press conference? Some bloke decided it would be good to ask his views on Gaza. Then some dim lass to ask him about independence referendum. His "I did not it was even happening" response brought much snorting and rightful ridicule of the journo.
What goes through these people's heads before they ask a question. No wonder people think journos are uo there with lawyers as a bunch of de Kocks

Re: The Commonwealth Games
How did the Aussie leave the field behind like this in the marathon? Sure last time I looked the African contingent had left the rest well behind.

Great race by Adam Gemili to get silver - rocketed out of the blocks. Really pleased for him - nice bloke.
Re: The Commonwealth Games
Indeed.
But the winner looked about a foot taller, and his step a foot longer!

This is where the Poms put the Comm Games afterburners on and leave Aus in the medal count weeds - the athletics.

Re: The Commonwealth Games
Oh, I don't know.
Australia - sometimes (a bit misleadingly) called a very outdoor-orientated nation - invested very heavily in certain sports in the late 20th century, in terms of finance, facilities and coaching, and there were enough talented elite athletes to take up that challenge and beat the world in those specific areas. Swimming, cycling being the two most obvious sports, rugby especially the league code another - though that more by private club interest and investment, I think. (Cricket is not dissimilar in this respect.)
But it's by no means guaranteed England (as opposed to the UK, as of 2012) is going to run up a large medal haul in the next few days - despite replicating the Australian model of investment in that and cycling in particular in the early years of this millennium.
It remains to be seen.

There's always a home Games advantage. Otherwise things just fluctuate with star performers and coaches.
