I hear they are oiling up Rod Stewarts wheelchair.
Re: The Commonwealth Games
That has to be one of the worst opening ceremonies of all time. John Barrowman, Iron Bru, people dressed up in Tunnocks teacakes and women tapping chairs?

BD is still bitter that they left Tasmania off the map of Oz in that opening ceremony.

Re: The Commonwealth Games
I don't like the typical convention of big sporting opening ceremonies, full stop. It now seems a rule to be overlong, overblown and full of buttock-clenching humour and bad (insufficient) cutting. I applaud the attempts of those who staged Barrowman to take the piss out of the lamentable Danny Boyle endlessly self-indulgent story-of-my,-the-great-Danny-Boyle's-life utter farrago of 2012 - but I fear Barrowman's cavortings were not intended entirely as a comical rubbishing of that inflated rubbish of London.
But it was all waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. The mayor of Glasgow, his voice getting faster, more excited and higher pitched by the sentence, sounded as if he was demanding if the crowd wanted total war.
That said, there were some good bits this time. The spirit of the Games stuff. Some of the (colourful, entertaining) kits and smiles. (But NOT the Scottish gear. Terrible terrible fake-style washed-out kilts and Malvolio stockings.) The retrospective highlights of previous Games and achievements. The Scotty dogs, crazily irrelevant as that was. Daley and Tanni Grey Thompson, The Thorpedo, Allan Wells, Becky Adlington, etc ... some of the blasts from the past generally making eloquent little inputs. Not sure aboot the Great Galoot, Chris Hoy though - overexposed.
Oh well, maybe some of the events will be interesting.

Don't look now but they've left us off the swimming cossie pattern this time as well.

It might give Victoria a chance at winning the Shield at least.

Of course there will always be a map of Tassie under some of the cossies.
Re: The Commonwealth Games
I thought after the 1982 Brisvegas Comm Games "No Tassie" debacle, this mistake would never be made again.

I was living in Darwin at the time. We weren't thrilled with the melding of the Top End into FNQ either.

"Territorial Decapitation"??
From similar memories of the time, I seem to recall 3 or 4 vollies forming a little triangle under the Brisvegas Aus when the "oops, no Tassie" error was realised.

Never noticed that. Not that I was anywhere near Brisbane at the time. I may have even forgotten it was on. Wouldn't have been to hard to get that map to include the Gulf, an area considerably larget than Tassie.

On the contrary, Horald. This thread has been seized and colonised by Oz adventurers!

Is it my imagination or isn't this something that usually no one gives a fark about? Seems to be getting far more coverage than I can ever remember.

Well, it's because it's in Britain... Manchester '02 got plenty of coverage, the ones in between much less so over here.vilkrang wrote:Is it my imagination or isn't this something that usually no one gives a fark about? Seems to be getting far more coverage than I can ever remember.

It's a case of Norfolk & Good for South Africa, as Norfolk Island beat the Yarps at bowls.
