I don't think its the students causing the violence tbh, more like anarchists, commies, and some opportunistic thugs.

Swanny on twitter just now-
Students.looking for an intelligent and articulate way to argue the case for lower tuition fees? Why not set fire to a tree, vandalise oxford street and then deface the statue of a national hero. The rest of the country will then unite behind you! Morons.
Spot on.

Re: The Ashes
Man, what a load of qunts.
I hope people don't judge all students by a minority of militant halfwits.
Having said that, I am bitterly disappointed at the government, though. A twofold two-fingers in making it unaffordable for many and then cutting the funding to universities anyway. I don't know how we're supposed to compete with the rest of the world when the people in charge are so intent on shafting our best and brightest.
I know we're in financial strife, and all, but it seems obvious to me that the facilities turning out the next generation of leaders and thinkers who may, just may, be able to help the world get out of this huge mess - financial, ecological, and several other things ending in l - should be protected and shored up as much as possible.
As for the liberal democrats - pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. After such a huge student vote, this is is as good as biting the hand that feeds you. It's not even the fact they broke the promise that upsets me the most, it's that they broke their promise not to break their promises. I honestly thought, and I know I wasn't alone, that we might finally have had some politicians who weren't connniving and dishonest to the core. Screwed if I'm ever voting for them again, though, I'd be immensely surprised if they recover from this for thirty or forty years.

Re: The Ashes
Deplorable scenes.
Cutting off the heads of HRHs Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall was bad enough, but then impaling them on the railings opposite Liberty's was really a step too far. Think of the cleaning bills for Le Pain Quotidien.
As for the police response. Understandable, but surely somewhat disproportionate. Machinegunning those three thousand defenceless students and anarchists will live on in the annals of shame.
A glint of good news from the whole sorry affair is that we now know the Trident deterrent actually works. Taking out the whole of Regent St/Oxford St/West End/Central London with that single surgical strike will send a shiver up the collective spines of Al Qaida, no question.

Re: The Ashes
What can they do though, they didn't win the election? I thought coalitions were meant to be the new 'brave' politics where grown-ups compromised.
The police are weak though, can you imagine the French or Italian riot police not cracking a few skulls if their treasury was being attacked?

Re: The Ashes
I can't understand how the police authority didn't figure out that some sort of a barricade system might be useful, given the strength of emotions of many, and the wish to wreak havoc of the few.

They did.
They broke down the barricades and charged the police with the fence
