timeless test to determine champs
from ABC Online
"The International Cricket Council (ICC) has flagged the possibility of a timeless Test to determine the winner of the inaugural world Test cricket championship in 2013.
Regular Test matches are limited to five days, regardless of how much cricket is played, but an open-ended match would see the contest extend as long as necessary to crown an undisputed Test champion.
ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said a play-offs plan for the top four Test nations is in the pipeline.
"It is common knowledge that we hope in 2013 the top four teams will be involved in two semi-finals and a final to determine a world Test champion," Lorgat said ahead of the 2,000th ever Test match to be played between England and India at Lord's.
"Whether (drawn games) are decided on a first-innings basis or on runs scored in the game, we don't know. But they will come up with a viable formula to determine a winner.
"The final may be a timeless Test. At this stage we don't know, but we are looking into the mechanics."
As it stands, India is the top-ranked Test side in the world followed by South Africa, England and Sri Lanka. Australia is fifth.
The finals system would likely pit the top Test side against the fourth-best team, with the winner to take on the victor from second against third.
If played as a one-off timeless Test, the final would not favour the highest-ranked side who would ordinarily, as in the case of the Sheffield Shield final, have the advantage of playing for a draw.
"Statistics tell us that most Test matches now produce a result inside five days, but it may yet be a timeless Test," Lorgat said.
"It is a work in progress but I would favour finding a winner because you want a world champion."
Lord's would likely be the host for the final in the same year Australia travels to England for The Ashes.
The last timeless Test was played between South Africa and England at Durban in 1939.
The match was played over 12 days before being declared a draw because the English side, which was at 5 for 654 in its fourth innings, had to leave or miss their ship home.
