The elastic and ambiguous spirit of cricket
http://m.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/spirit-gets-a-recall-briefly-20110805-1ifji.html
Makes some fair points. Funny how we take the high moral ground on issues like the Bell run out but accept batsmen who know they're out but stand their ground with impunity. Baum compares the Harbi wicket where he got a palpable edge to the ball with the fielders' reaction for instance. Viv Richards is not presented in a favourable light.

Re: The elastic and ambiguous spirit of cricket
There is no way India would have recalled the batsman if they were playing Australia.

Jebus the websites for Australian papers look cheap - its like stepping back into 1998.
I think Greg Baum has dialled this one somewhat. E.g.:
Actually, so did India. Reportedly, England asked Dhoni three times on the field to recall Bell, unavailingly. Except for the accident of tea, Bell would have been replaced, the match would have gone on, and the incident remembered as just another in a tawdry catalogue. It was that close.
Nice use of 'Reportedly', in the 'Completely made up' sense. Morgan and Bell were stood by the boundary for the whole bally-hoo.
Subsequently, England failed the spirit of cricket twice anyway. No announcement was made of Bell's reprieve, which means the Indians retook the field to a chorus of boos. But do you think Bell gestured acknowledgement of Dhoni's graciousness? Of course not.
No announcement was made of Bell's reprieve because the teams decided not to tell anyone. And how does he know Bell didn't acknowledge Dhoni?
Re: The elastic and ambiguous spirit of cricket
Gaz
you could also add that 'except for the accident of tea' Bell wouldn't have been walking off the ground to be in a position to be run out
