Who is Harry Gurney??
Can he fold his face up so his chin meets his eyebrows, as his name suggests?
More to the point, does anyone know if he is any good?
It's not every day you read "left-arm fast" (which sounds like a right recipe for flailing limbs, and trouble.)
Left-arm fast. PP should be informed. (But only if he is any good.)

Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
Well:
Have you ever heard of Sir Goldsworthy Gurney? Distant ancestor.
No, he's not fast, when I've seen him anyway. Dobs.
No, he's not good, when I've seen him anyway.
A T20 average of 20 isn't the 'hottest' either.

Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
So much for that urban myth then.
I have heard of John Galsworthy, gallstones, and Oliver and James Out Out Out Goldsmith. And Mrs Khan (briefly) and that Hooray Henry MP who bears his father's name. But not Sir GG.
But in any case. How can he be a distant ancestor of some knight called Goldsworthy? Are you a clairvoyant?

Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
That bit I made up. Not the person, but the relation to Harry. He could be, for all we know.
As for the rest, I'd be shocked to see him as out-and-out quick, but I have just seen him in the two matches. Hence really I shouldn't have damned him inexorably to the pit of gash.

Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
cricinfo is always a bit "approximate" though.
I've seen them label bowlers "MF" who are sharp, as well as vice versa.
And they quite often ignore a second-string action. Though I note they have now added "offbreak" to "MF" for Lancashire's Croft (though again, in that case he's not much more than a back-up/partnership-breaking/emergency bowler with either action).

Yeah, although they rarely use 'F' incorrectly. Which may make me rethink my stance. Seemed to me to dob it down.

Had to look at the thread starter to make sure Mudge hadn't started this...

I sort of had a similar feeling. At least he didn't ask the 'should he be England's new bowler?' question.
Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
was VERY fast in UCCE cricket. Not sure if he's still as potent in FC games, but he's moving to Notts apparently for next season, so he'll get some 4 day cricket.

Maybe he tones it down for OD cricket, I'm talking 'dob'. Not even 'meh'.... 'dob'.
Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
well not many guys go on to get county contracts from Uni, so he must've done something right. Even if it was just Leics...

Aye true Jill, he's been bobbins in the FC stuff so far. Quite a rough diamond apparently. Coal, even.
Re: Who is Harry Gurney??
coal is surely the roughest diamond you can get?

Saucy blighter.
As Monkehh indicates, where did I say he should be IN the squad? NOW? Stripped for action? Or at least in his whites. Eh? Eh?
Eh?
The double "?" should have alerted a careful reader to the fact this was no ordinary Big Mudgeup.
This was bafflement. This was bemusement. This was damn near bewilderment. How had an (allegedly) LF county tearaway slipped so completely past my (admittedly dodgy) sentinel of basic recognition? (*)
Was he any good, was not exactly fastening a rosette to his bridle.
(*)
A: HALT! Who goes there? Friend, or foe?
B: Foe - with a f'ing primed and loaded uzi in one hand, and a f'ing primed and loaded AK47 in the other.
A: (.... short pause....) Pass, foe.
