It's just not cricket - Pat Howard appointed GM of team perf
FORMER Wallaby Pat Howard will be anointed as the man to lead Australian cricket out of the doldrums.
Howard, 37, has won the race to fill Cricket Australia’s newly created position of general manager of team performance.
He played 20 Tests for the Wallabies and later coached Leicester Tigers. He has also worked as Australian Rugby Union’s high performance manager.
The position of general manager of team performance was created in the wake of Don Argus’ review into Australian cricket. Howard will be in charge of the Australian coach, captain, chairman of selectors, team manager and Centre of Excellence manager.
His appointment will be made official at a press conference in Melbourne at 2pm today.
Former Wallaby teammate Tim Horan said Howard is an excellent man manager.
“I played with and against Pat for quite a while,” said Horan.
"He was a skilful player on the field, but his greatest skills were off it. He’s young, an excellent man manager and has gained good experience over the years with the ARU and Leicester.”

So he's Australia's equivalent of Hugh Morris in England?
I would have thought the players and coaches would have liked someone who had played at least first class cricket.......although maybe that's why they picked this guy. He can apply a pragmatic approach rather than doing favours for his old teammates.

Is that the Lalor article?
Hardly anything nasty in that ...
the only thing I could see was the problem of appointing O'Keefe captain and fitting Horrorz and Smith into the team

I reckon Hauritz wont even get a start. They'll go with Smith as he's done well with the bat at State level- Can hold his own at number six or maybe even higher.
NSW (without the international players)-
Jaques
Maddinson
Katich
Smith
Rohrer
Nevill+
Henriques
O'Keefe(c)
Hazlewood
Starc
Cockley

I think Howards appointment might work. His job is more about motivation than skills so his lack of first class cricket experience is largely irrelevant.
Re: It's just not cricket - Pat Howard appointed GM of team perf
Pat Howard was interviewed on the wireless this morning and he made an impressive case regarding his appointment. As BD said it is more about managing personalities rather than skills so FC experience not important
The best part of the interview was when he was asked "So if we are not #1 in the next 5 years do we blame you?" He answered a blunt Yes. Refreshing change from Hildick
Obviously I take back my accusation of yesterday - skully clearly had nothing to do with his appointment. Unless of course he was presented with a list of names and thought that Pat Howard was an instruction so ticked it gleefully
