Since they can't exactly do anything to him - short of desecrating his grave - there could well be a few other guys quaking in their boots...

So why hasn't anyone else been brought to book then?

Baseless accusations seem to be the in thing this week.

bizarre string of comments from saffie fans on the article....many seem of the extreme religious persuasion ....most revere Cronje and feel he took the fall for others...the following comment typified some of the more extreme contributions

"....always thought Hansie was set up by(the Waugh brothers Fatboy Warnie now Liz Hurleys lapdog the Indians,the Pakis & without a doubt the English)Hansie took the wrap (sic) for these despicable people who like to call themself cricketers(the gentalmans game)so much for the Aussies being gentalmen they are crass & vulgar,as for the rest my Hansies death haunt you till the day you die,he would still be here today if some of you admitted your guilt when he was in the dock.
Hansie was the best captain S.Africa ever had .We loved him then we still love him now.

Dearie me, whatever else you say about this forum our punctuation is usually better than that.

Without the parentheses, or at lack a damn good comma or two it sounds like this fella is actually accusing Liz Hurley's pet dog of framing Cronje - although he /she later goes on to blame the English, so maybe that's what he/she did mean.

what else can you expect from a gentalman. An i away from being awkward.

Maybe the Saffie education system, which unleashed Hansie onto the world (and was also raved about ad whatever comes after nauseum by the late Mr Roebuck), could afford to ditch the odd boxing class and sched in a few remedial punctuation and spelling sessions.

Apparently all countries use to fix games so the 1990s were quite rubbish for cricket and we thought things were brilliant.

A delerious Horrie and a drunken vilks could not between them concoct that assault on spelling, grammar, syntax, and common sense.

I suppose many of the Hansie zealots are Afrikaners which would mean that English is their second language.

The words horace quoted were probably not written by an Afrikaner, as it contains no typical mistakes one would expect from an Afrikaner with a poor command of English.

The tragedy is that the South African team under Hansie Cronje came to be one admired and respected by a broad spectrum of South Africans, whereas before cricket in South Africa had been an elitist sport of an English-speaking, upper class minority. When I was growing up, a local sports magazine wrote an article about one guy because he was the only Afrikaner playing first class cricket at the time. There were, perhaps, two or three players of colour around. Most of the stalwarts of the game were products of just a few famous private schools.

Many people in South Africa hate Cronje for betraying their trust. Others see him as a scapegoat who took a fall when many others walked free. IMO holders of both opinions have a point.
