I'd like to see Philander bowl on a flattie before I dedicate a sack full of cum to him.

Re: Steyn vs Philander
If Philander and Tahir turn out to be the real deal then on paper South Africa probably have the best team in the world. However it's days like today which make me question whether or not they'll be the force that they should be.
Not sure about Smith making the wrong decision with bringing Tahir back, if the umpire had raised the finger on that lbw appeal then it would have stood even if it had been reviewed. Very nearly a master stroke.
If anything I think he should have brought him on earlier though, would have been a big call with the new ball being taken but he did mop up the tail very effectively in the first innings and in the few balls he bowled he looked the most likely to grab a wicket.

South Africa already do have the best team in the World on paper. They've had the best team in the World on paper for the last 10 years. Remember when they played Aus in 2001-02 in what was widely considered to be the battle for World supremacy? Many people had the Saffies as favourites for that series, because on paper, they were the Boer's bollocks.
If cricket was played on paper, South Africa would be Earth's representatives against those feisty cricketers from Mars. If mental strength wasn't such a big factor in cricket, the Saffies would be storming across the cricketing World, burning houses, raping women, and taking everything of value they find, leaving shattered, traumatised cricket teams in their wake.
As it is they were no match for the dominant Aus team of 1995-2007, and are blowing their chance to emerge from the shadows and become the outright World number one after a nervous and sloppy display against a moderate Aus side. They may even let Sri Lanka win their first test in ages.
Just can't quite take the next step that paper suggests they should be cruising to.

SL gotta be shittiest team amongst all test playing nations. They just don't have any steel in them. The way they collapse against a mediocre Pak team shows just that and that too in conditions tailor made for them. They may even let Sri Lanka win their first test in ages.
They'd be like lambs for slaughter when they tour SA.

Congrats to Philander on a remarkable start to his career. I wonder how he'll go in the subcontinent?

In the past two tests Philander has been as good as Anderson in the past two years

Philander - ave 13.92
Anderson - ave 23.43
I'd say VP has been better, going on the above.
Re: Steyn vs Philander
Surely Jimmy would have done better than Steyn yesterday. It was disappointing from Steyn, really. Expecially when he had gotten rid of Siddle and had four deliveries at young Cummins. He served up an average bouncer followed by some pretty harmess away swingers outside off stump with a brand new ball.
The fact that he didn't charge in and demolish the stumps of the last 2 Aussie batsmen in quick succession to win the test for the Saffies is the type of thing people remember when calculating ATG worthiness. Just a little thing, but a thing nonetheless.

Yeah, and Jimmikins takes a fiver every innings.
How many play and misses did Steyn induce yesterday?

The tail will play and miss every time against a swinging new ball, They're not good enough to edge it. It was a time to go for the stumps.

Where have I complained?
Just ridiculing Trev's attempts to justify his idiotic comment of last week.

Re: Steyn vs Philander
I just said you sobbed at the thought that, just for one day, that Jimmy may have outperformed Steyn.
Re: Steyn vs Philander
And South Africa had been very disciplined with their lines up until the tea break, but there was a period after tea where Steyn lost patience against Haddin and Johnson and went into yorker-bouncer mode. Aus got away and it meant that the Saffie's fall back option (the draw aided by bad light) was lost. Another 15 mins and I reckon Billy would have taken them off.
Still, of course Steyn is a fantastic bowler. It was just a situation that REALLY mattered and he didn't quite show up.

No, Jimmy wasn't playing yesterday.
Anyway, it was the balsmen who cost us the test not the bowlers.

Trev, it happens to every bowler, including Warne and McGrath.Henry wrote:And South Africa had been very disciplined with their lines up until the tea break, but there was a period after tea where Steyn lost patience against Haddin and Johnson and went into yorker-bouncer mode. Re: Steyn vs Philander
Yeah true. And without his cameo with the bat, Aus would have cruised home.
I agree with you that the batsmen lost South Africa the game on day 4. AB played a loose drive, and once again the tail didn't wag. Morne Morkel frustrates me with the bat. He clearly has talent but he seems to put no price at all on his wicket, and is a bit naive.

Well, it was the highest successful 4th innings run chase there... but I get what you're saying.

Hopefully Gazza can sort him out. He should at least be reliable as Steyn.
