Leaking India nuclear plant under investigationRelated Story: Gillard seeks to strengthen ties with IndiaRelated Story: Uranium talks to dominate PM's India visitMap: India
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is inspecting an Indian nuclear plant after several radiation leaks at the facility.
Earlier this year, dozens of workers at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station received dangerous doses of radiation as a result of two separate leaks.
The power station supplies energy to a large section of northern India.
The Indian government has invited a team from the international nuclear watchdog to conduct a safety inspection of the plant.
The IAEA said it was the first time New Delhi had issued such an invitation to the Vienna-based body.
The visit came just over three months after managers at the plant revealed more than 40 workers had been exposed to tritium radiation in separate leaks.
The first accident occurred on June 23 when 38 people were exposed during maintenance work on a coolant channel at the plant in the town of Rawatbhata in Rajasthan state.
Two of them received radiation doses equivalent to the annual permissible limit, he said, but all those involved have since returned to work.
In a second incident in July, another four maintenance workers at the plant were exposed to tritium radiation while they were repairing a faulty seal on a pipe.
India is engaged in a drive for nuclear power, with a host of plants based on Russian, Japanese, American and French technology under consideration or construction.
The country's growing economy is currently heavily dependent on coal, getting less than 3 per cent of its energy from its existing atomic plants, and the government hopes to raise the figure to 25 per cent by 2050.
A report by India's auditor-general has found serious problems with safety regulations within India's nuclear facilities.
Australia has just agreed to supply uranium to India.
The Bannies COARIAB as everyone in the world knows...the laughable constructions for the Commie Games was one thing but allowing these corrupt turkeys to have nuke power is another...Australia is in absolute disgrace for agreeing to export uranium to bannieland

Between that and living half the day with no electricity, I know which I'll take. Or we could just increase fossil fuels
It's not India's nuclear power that would or should worry the world at the moment.

With global warming there'll be gazillions of litres flowing off the Himalayas pretty soon.
Sounds like a grouse hydro electric opportunity.

Hmm, "tritium radiation", that sounds bad, definitely must ban it now. If it says "radiation", it must be bad.
Useless hacks.

In a few hundred million years when the lizards rise up they'll have to deal with our radiation dumps.

Don't worry, soon we will have figured out how to dump rubbish straight into the Earth's core, that's pretty much all waste problems solved in one swoop. Either that, or we will have some sort of space elevator and fire it all into the Sun, which is an even better plan.

Actually, upon further thought, they'll probably have risen up because of our radiation dumps.

Well the IAEA says that the plant maintains good safety practises, and made a couple of recommendations to further enhance it. Nones to get the knickers in a twist about yet.
