Re: To do with hundreds...
Don't know what happened to Laurie Mayne, he was pretty useful ... probably got squeezed out by the great avalanche of West Australian fast bowling talent around at that time.
I remember Jock Irvine moved to Victoria at the start of the 1971-2 season, after a fair 1970-71 season for WA (esentially he swapped states with Graeme Watson), but he never got selected for Victoria, who had Ken Eastwood making hundreds for fun that year, and were grooming Alan Sieler in the middle order. Ray Jordon was supplanted after one more season by Richie Robinson, initially an inferior keeper, but a far superior batsman.

Laurie Mayne's biggest claim to fame was that he started a bumper war in the West Indies in 1964/65. Unfortunately for the Australian batsmen, the Windies had Hall & Griffith in their bowling attack. Not an ideal place to start a bumper war!

Cricketers are slow learners though. 10 years they had to let that lesson sink in, but that wasn't long enough for an English medium-pacer called Tony Greig to try the same stunt by bowling bouncers at Dennis Lillee.

Dean Jones later perfected that art, Basil, when he complained about Curtley's wristbands ...

Re: To do with hundreds...
The strongest of those Australian sides sent to NZ was the 1956-57 team.
It was the only one which did not coincide with a Test tour. It was not quite a Test team because the very good opening partnership of Burke and Mcdonald did not tour. Davidson was another notable absentee and Jarman was preferred to Wally Grout.
NZ at the time, and for several more years, had quite a decent pace attack but little batting strength other than the declining Bert Sutcliffe and the fallible John Reid.
Australia won by 10 wickets the only "Test" to be decided. They would have steamrollered NZ in a Test series at full strength.

I wonder if Allan Donald's team mates properly "thanked" him for the bouncer he shoved up Devon Malcom's nose before Malcom took that 9fer.
