And Pete, 10, 20, 30, it doesn't really matter, the opportunity would've been there for a few more. Having said that, 330 is enough.

330 should certainly be as enough as 360. To make an England win 99.4% unlikely. Only some really shoite Aussie bowling in the first 15 overs would make that 0.6% at all significant.
You could even say 330 is better than 360, insofar as it keeps that 0.6% open. The really shoite bowling might lure the Poms on to the rocks.
Yes, of course, England are likely to be of a pragmatic mind to follow probability ratios and try to shut up shop from Ball 1. But it is psychologically not easy to just block for up to 90 overs (or are there a few more, for time lost?). Playing half-naturally might give them a false-security sniff of a win. That's where England are specialists in losing a clatter of wickets.
Or it might just be a clatter of rain for most of the day.

Question for Embee. Even in the days of the light appeal, didn't the umpires still have the right to suspend play if they thought the conditions were too dangerous?

It's 6 am here in Manchester, it's raining. Draw.
Unless we can squeeze 40 overs in somewhere and one of the Aussie bowlers does something special.

Did t the Saffies avoid a whitewash in 1936 because the umps were worries about Stan McCabe hurting the Saffe fielders?

Have to look up my old laws book later
but I think the general Law was that the batting team had the option to stay on in bad light ...not sure if this was the Test playing condition
2010 revisions of the Laws made the umps the sole judges ..and the captains could go farque themselves

Tough choice between the Rain and the Umpires to be the MoM for England in this match.

Incidentally there was bright sunshine from.around 7 pm through 10 pm last night and the weather is forecast to clear again around 6-7 tonight.
The weather gods are qunts.
On the umpiring late yesterday, whose safety were the umpires concerned about? The batsmen (who both wanted to continue) or the fieldsmen (all on the boundary anyway).
How long ago was that famous victory by England v Pakistan in fading light, when the Pakistani fielders wanted to go off 'for their own safety'?

That was about 2000 I think.

Geez, looking at the radar, it's unlikely there will be any play at all today. I'm happy that England have retained the Ashes, but I feel a little empty that it's happened like this.

I suspect England are still smirking about all the time they wasted yesterday, knowing that the rain was on the way. Warnie touched on it in his commentary by observing that England were 'not trying to win the game'. I guess that sums up the difference in the mindsets between the two sides. Australia will always go for the win whereas England will 'sit on their hands' if it means they will get a tactical advantage. I know which makes for more attractive cricket.
Re: England v Australia, 3rd Test, Old Trafford, 1-5 August, 2013
It's about time that umpires made players more accountable for time-wasting. It's frustrating at times when so few balls get bowled. England is a culprit here but Clarke should refrain from running down in the middle of overs to consult his bowlers. Just get on with it!
Pity this ends in a damp squib but at least Australia has been a lot more competitive than the poms expected based on how we've been ridiculed in their press. It's the Lord's debacle which was costly to our reputation.

Hmm. Don't want to jinx it but it has certainly listened up here over the last 10 minutes. Still fine drizzle but a the cloud is a lot higher.

Just seeing the highlights package from yesty, and in retrospect it's a bit surprising they stayed on as long as they did.
Even while Warner was still batting, it was so dark that Swann wasn't wearing sunglasses....

I guess England doesn't have to TRY and go for the win when they're up against this Aussie side. Congrats to Aus for avoiding their seventh straight defeat. No doubt England wasted time yesterday, but for Aussies to be whingeing about that now just sounds like sour grapes. If you hadn't been so awful at Lord's, you wouldn't be in this position.
And for the record, England could have bowled 20 overs an hour yesterday, and it would have still pissed it down all day today and been a drawn test!

He's talking about the difference in mindset between the two sides- Like Aus wouldn't be doing exactly the same time wasting tactics if they were in England's position. And ultimately, as I pointed out, it hasn't changed the fact that it's pouring down today, and time wasting or not, this test will be a draw.
