ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/2ue-to-air-ashes-as-abc-loses-stranglehold-20131003-2uxfm.html
The ABC will lose its exclusive rights to Test cricket in Australia, with radio stations 2UE and 3AW to cover the game alongside the national broadcaster starting with this summer's Ashes series.
In an historic move by Cricket Australia aimed at broadening the audience of cricket's traditional format its broadcast rights team is deep in negotiations with Fairfax Radio, which owns major commercial channels in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as well as stations in Perth.
And in another development that leaves the ABC frozen out of covering domestic cricket, Triple M has picked up the rights to the Twenty20 Big Bash League.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
Seriously, is anyone going to listen to the cricket on 2UE?
It's not an historic move anyway. 2UE used to cobroadcast it in the 80s.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
Shouldn't affect those who listen to the ABC in any way. If anything it takes cricket to a wider audience. As the CEO of the ABC said though, it remains to be seen whether or not the commercial stations will still cover it when less hyped series are in the offing.
AW did do the cricket some years back but it didn't last long. They assumed the audience were all morons and called the fielding positions like hands on the clock, i.e. he plays the ball to o'clock and takes a single.

My memory may be off the beam here, God knows I've no wish to remember, but wasn't the AW coverage headed by that well-known cricket expert Harry Beitzel?

Yes Fred, spot on. They've played grabs of his commentary from time to time. It's hilarious. He smashes the ball to two o'clock for a boundary!Fred Nerk wrote:My memory may be off the beam here, God knows I've no wish to remember, but wasn't the AW coverage headed by that well-known cricket expert Harry Beitzel?

Anyway the only reason people listen to the cricket on radio is to avoid the farking adds. Can't see it affecting much esp in the bush.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
they did on digital. I'm slightly concerned if 3AW is doing the broadcast, since Brian Taylor is on their (AFL) commentary team. oh boy, wowee!Bradman wrote:Did the ABC ever cover Bb games.Blackadder wrote:http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/2ue-to-air-ashes-as-abc-loses-stranglehold-20131003-2uxfm.htmlThe ABC will lose its exclusive rights to Test cricket in Australia, with radio stations 2UE and 3AW to cover the game alongside the national broadcaster starting with this summer's Ashes series.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
Apparently* CA won't let the ABC stream it's commentary on its website because Ch Nein have "exclusive digital rights" to the cricket.
FFS, are CA aware of things like TuneIn Radio?
Meanwhile:
The ABC is expected to devote more time to soccer's A-League - one of cricket's main summer rivals - in the absence of the BBL.

I don't think it's makes any difference that ABC aren't covering the Ryobi. But not being able to cover the Shield is a bit of a blow.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
Yep. The ABC did a heap of them last year and they rated their socks off. Unfortunately one night the ABC crossed to the news just before the last ball of a thrilling match. It happened automatically and was a mistake... but that didn't save the switchboard from going into meltdown.Bradman wrote:

Cricket Australia are imbeciles if they are fair dinkum about not letting the ABC broadcast the Sheffield Shield. You can't buy the sort of exposure that radio coverage gives cricket in general. It's one of the worst decisions CA has made in the past decade, which is saying something, considering they've made some absolute shockers.

Re: ABC loses exclusive radio rights,
Apparently CA are doing their best to sabotage cricinfo at every turn. Worried about their content(raw news) which greatly differs from the CA message(Their news). George, the guy who captains occasionally, was hauled ove the coals for dissing the Ryobi format and scheduling in general.
