Odious/irritating TV characters?
Inspired by the sad passing of Rik Mayall, whose prissy, sanctimonious Cliff R-worshipping mummy's boy 'radical' from The Young Ones was enough to kill off student politics for a generation (arguably not a bad outcome)
A few to kick discussions off:
Hyacinth Bucket
Just about everybody on Men Behaving Badly
The half-witted son of the parish heavy and the even more half-witted verger in Vicar of Dibley, whose "relationship' has the all-time low URST index
(Please note that the likes of Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt don't really fit this discission as technically they are not fictional characters)
Your turn!

Arthur's brother (played by ? Fred Scheps IIRC) in 'Mother and Son'. Just a selfish shit.

I used to find Albert Steptoe odious until I realised I am the old man's mirror image

Big Dog wrote:Everyone who ever appeared in an Australian soapie.
Special mention: Prisoner Cell Block H, a white-hot field headed by the Kerry Armstrong character and that toothless mumbling inbred whose brother got shot in a siege and then her daughter fell off the roof .
I think the brother in Mother & Son may have been played by Henri Szeps.
(Oh dear....Friends....that is its very own can of worms)

The infantilised Queen Elizabeth I played by whichever Richardson bint, was much more irritating than Baldrick - for starters that bloody fingernails down the blackboard voice!!!

Re: Odious/irritating TV characters?
Almost anybody in a soap.
Alan B'Stard? (On a serious note: it appears Rik Mayall the man was almost diametrically opposed in character to the series of barstewards/nincompoops he played. Painstaking, thoughtful. In retrospect it seems a pity the available parts and perhaps the zeitgeist of the Thatcher Era encouraged him to play "lowest-common-denominator roles", since by reliable accounts (at least until the mishap of 1998!) he had a far greater comic and also serious range than that as an actor.)
Oh, and Jeremy Clarkson. Totally implausible character. Anyone know who plays him?

Re: Odious/irritating TV characters?
Surely some of these characters are more irritating than others, in the sense that some of them were MEANT to be walking sennapods.
Most of Prof Baron Cohen's boy's unlikely roles have been excruciatingly toe-curling - but that doesn't mean some of them (well, the first two, for a while) weren't a barrel of laughs too. Partly for that reason.
Are we damning, or praising, or hurling both in the same pot?
