I don't know which way it's going with Cook. I've heard two straws in the wind he may bow out shortly. But it may be just chaff.
In fact, I think he's improved massively this summer, admittedly from rock bottom with both bat and baton. He'll never impress with words. But the indications are he's become less bunker-mentalitied, more open to input, more inclined to take the occasional risk as a captain (yep, I know), and his batting too has been rebuilt to an extent.
One difference is I don't think, as in the last Ashes, that the problems start with the very worst aspects of Cook and Pietersen. Darius III and Achilles on the one side (notionally).
Cook will be a better captain if he has a bit more batting than Root, and a bit more bowling than Anderson, Broad, Stokes, Wood or Finn (taking turns).

On the basis that it's far too early for Root to hold the job and there are no viable alternatives - then Chef is probably safe in the job for as long as he wants it.

I still say that is nuts. Cook could play another 8 years.

Possibly, but international cricket must take it out of you - players are retiring at younger ages than they used to. Also,Cook has a fully formed life away from the game - I'll wager he'll give it five years then hang his bat up.

That "take it out of you" is something Cook himself has made pretty clear. I'm just glad he's turned "bad stubborn" more towards "good stubborn".

A fully formed life? He stick his hands up cow's vajayjays. If that fully formed life meant so much to him, he'd have given ODI cricket up years ago, because he wasn't very good at it. The post WC whinge told us that it isn't so.

I suppose Baz meant more wife and kids and stuff, than actual vackinas.

Some cricketers feel the draw more than others, sooner or later.

That's what I meant, his family is special. He loves his family more than the other players.
Re: Sorry Poms ...but Thank You
how much of that would be due to bayliss input?PeterCS wrote: But the indications are he's become less bunker-mentalitied, more open to input, more inclined to take the occasional risk as a captain (yep, I know), ....

It seems to ddate from (Farbrace with), Strauss, McCullum and Bayliss.
Last three followed in quick succession, so I'm unsure what factor or what combination pushed him to play a bit of cricket instead of trench warfare.
