This has all the hallmarks of a pretty major stuff-up by Manthorpe. I don't know if he has a preceding reputation for being sloppy, wouldn't have thought so...

The reason I asked about whether the ABC broadcast goes to SA is, if somebody over there heard it, somebody can deny it if it's incorrect.

This was on a number of websites at the same time as Castro's death was announced. I'm assuming this Trev didn't die with the contents of a pharmacy and a Harlem pimp's manbag in his stomach?

What's this crap about 'midfielders'? Tommy H would be turning in his grave to hear of one of his players being so described. Billy B was very definitely a CENTREMAN.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVI / The Death Thread 2016
Known widely as “Punga”, Alan Preen will always command a place in WA sport held by few others.
Preen, who died aged 81 on Sunday after a long illness, was an extremely versatile and talented sportsman who was an All-Australian footballer in 1958 and played first-class cricket for WA.
Since 1953, when All-Australian teams were first officially selected, only Preen, Bruce Duperouzel, George Young and Ken McAullay have claimed that dual honour.
Despite playing just 122 games in seven seasons with East Fremantle, Preen was named in the club’s team of the century, having twice won the best-and-fairest award and played in the 1957 WAFL premiership team.
He was also the runner-up in the 1958 Sandover Medal to East Perth’s Ted Kilmurray and played 15 matches for WA before ending his football career to embark on a professional cricket career in England and Scotland.
He was a more than useful left-hand medium-pace bowler.
“What he crammed into those years was quite magnificent,” WA football legend John Todd said on Preen’s 2009 induction into the WA Football Hall of Fame. “He could turn a game, he was really an impact player.”
WA football great Percy Johnson likened Preen’s ability to that of Essendon champion James Hird.
“He was one of the best sportspeople to have played in this State and was equally as good a bloke,” Johnson said.
“He was just one of those extraordinary talents that doesn’t come along very often.
“He did things with so much time and saw the game ahead of most people, and he was probably as good a kick as you’re ever going to see.
“He just didn’t make mistakes ... he was a superstar, a high-class player and he never knew what it was like to have fear because he never had it.”
WA cricket great Lawrie Sawle remembered his former teammate as a solid contributor.
“Alan was always very, very steady and a good performer,” Sawle said. “Just his accuracy, he was very accurate and pretty hard to get away.”
Preen is survived by his wife Thelma, three children Stuart, Jenni and Kym, and three grandchildren.

Sounds like an ace bloke and obviously highly accomplished in both sports.
Embee, I heard Bartlett say that 13 ex Tigers had died this year. Not good. You would have loved watching Billy B. Had a tough time suffering from depression which was untreated for many years.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVI / The Death Thread 2016
Billy B played a bit like Dangerfield.
Once when they were getting flogged by the filth, Hafey shifted him from the centre to full forward. He apparently kicked 8 in the second half. He was a prodigious kick and a great mark for his size.
Yep 13 is a lot.

Ha, I was waiting for that.
Incidentally, critics have always regarded Bourke, Barrott and Clay as one of the great lines of all time, yet they only played together 29 times, though oldtimers might have expected this to be a lot more.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVI / The Death Thread 2016
Well remember they day Billy kicked eight in a half (actually it was a quarter and a half)...second last round in 1969. A Carlton win would have ended Richmond's season and possibly Hafey's coaching career. He was unstoppable, playing on Wes Lofts who was slightly past his best but still one of the league's best full-backs.
He played several good games for Carlton in the half-season he ws there in 1971, but that didn't end well either. He was 'blown up' by an unknown 17yo kid from Fitzroy (Gary Wilson) in the 'fog' game, then in the last game the next wek got absolutely flogged by Barry Price, had a blue with Barassi at half time, and walked out in an almightly huff.
After trying to drive out of the car park still wearing his boots (rumoured but unconfirmed), he got half-way home, heard the score on the radio (Carlton were fighting back after trailing badly at half time), drove back to Princes Park and tried to get back in but they wouldn't let him, not even as a paying customer, because the joint was full.
Carlton's rationale for bringing him in in the first place was as a fill=in for another high-octane character, Brent Crosswell, who had contracted a rare form of polio and was meant to be done for the year, but had recovered faster than expected. Named as 20th man for the last game, he was Barrot's direct replacement and sparked the comeback with five goals.
After spending 1972 in the VFA, the only VFL club to show any interest in BB in 73 was North Melbourne. Guess who their coach was then?

I wonder how many have played more? Carlton had a couple of handy wingmen around the same time, but rotated a few through the centre (Crosswell, Jackson, Robertson, etc). Your lot had Barry Price in the middle and John Greening on one side, but a choice of a few (Ricky Watt, Rob Dean, Colin Tully, all State reps, prob others I've forgotten)) on the other.
To put that line together Hafey had to sacrifice Billy Brown who had played for Victoria on the wing, and he had to re-invent himself as a rover, It was a master-stroke by Hafey who wasn't meant to be that innovative, putting six-footers on the wings, and they were unbeatable for a couple of years until the rest of the competition caught up. Of course all three were also magnificent kicks and they had Royce Hart to aim at.

I heard the Lofts game referred to on radio; Barrott must have been a versatile player.
Crosswell's best games go down in footy folklore.
Incidentally he has a phobia of flying in planes and when the comp. went national, he had to drive to Sydney to play.

Had a little bit to do with Crosswell at Maonash. Bit of a rock star with lots of girls chasing him. But he had a serious brain. So did Steve Taubert, the famed ruck whisperer who trained up the Canadian.
All VFL students at Maonash in those days did eco stats. The eccentric lecturer - Keith Frearson - made it his business to ensure no footballer ever failed. He was a mad Bloods fan and I remember he had a swans rug on the floor in his office.
Good times.

Didn't realise Brent was a Clayton Teccer.....if there was one Carlton footballer of that era that would have wound up in Carlton even if the football club had never existed then he was it, and Melb U was the epicentre.
He married Bob Ansett's daughter after seeing her in the Record as the Ampol 'Football Girl of the Week'. He was the only footballer to regularly beat Ron Barassi at chess. He wrote an award-winning article about Vinny Catoggio's disastrous 1973 Grand Final, which didn't get him sacked from Carlton but did make the decision to let him go to North a whole lot easier.
Of course his health is also not great, having lived with Meuniere's Disease for the last 30 years.

Man-not-well...
Andrew Sachs, the actor who played clumsy Spanish waiter Manuel in the classic British comedy series Fawlty Towers, has died at 86.
The Sun reported that he passed away in a care home in the UK last week after being diagnosed with dementia four years ago.
His wife Melody told the Daily Mail: “It wasn’t all doom and gloom, he still worked for two years”.
