Send off rule for Cricket

A good thing or will it give Umpires too much power to influence the result of a game?

Re: Send off rule for Cricket
What happens when a fielder dives to take a catch?
Will it be classified as going down too softly? Geoff Boycott will disagree with the state of cricket. It's just not cricket.

I don't think its necessary. The transgressions they are talking about are:
- Threatening an umpire,
- Physically assaulting another player, umpire, official or spectator;
- Any other act of violence on the field of play.
How often does any of that happen. Match referee can deal with anything without getting the Umpires involved.

Hazlewood during the last NZ test series, asking "Who the f*ck is the third umpire?" would most certainly be a red.

Expect Fapp will be careful of this rule. ICC now accusing him of flagrant ball tampering. His appeal could end in a lengthy ban.
Pretty much what he deserves in my view.

I assume this will take shape to be some kind of a sin binning system?
Abuse of an umpire = off the pitch for the rest of the innings in a test.
It could be detrimental, i.e. if a mouthy fast bowler is taking 5fers here there and everywhere. If Mitchell Johnson had been binned for an innings during the 2013/14 Ashes, England might have found a foothold in a session.

I wonder whether Alderman and Symonds would have been penalised for their rough treatment of field invaders.

They'd have been given OBE's. Had it been during the 2005 Ashes.

This is a terrible idea. The offences mentioned should generally result in life bans anyway. If that isn't enough of a deterrent then a "sending off" ain't gonna move the dial.

Re: Send off rule for Cricket
Some of the players who might have received red cards under these proposed rules:
Dennis Lillee and Javed Miandad "what you want is a good kicking; no, let me hit you with my bat" incident
Sunil Gavaskar (dissent and walk-off)
Colin Croft (contact with umpire)
Michael Holding (kicking stumps down)
Chris Broad (swiping his own stumps down)
Geoff Boycott, Adelaide 1970-71 (throwing his bat in a tantrum after being run out)
Simon Jones (2005, when he threw the ball at Hayden, who had not ventured out of his crease)
Must be dozens of others?
... who else?

Maybe they just wanted to extend bowlers' rights to umpires?

DKL again (with his aluminium bat).
"Koff with yer metal club, son", muttered the umpire, as he raised the red card of doom.

I have seen one instance on a field that may have got a red card (threatening an umpire)
I have influenced the results of games with no ball calls and out/not out decisions ...should that power be taken away too?

Thats a different thing altogether. Removing a player from the field has far greater ramifications than penalising a run for a no ball. (and giving someone out when they ar'nt just means you're a crap Ump )
Re: Send off rule for Cricket
last ball of a limited over game
1 run behind (two to win)
waist high full toss ...pulled to mid wicket and caught ...called no ball and single completed
square leg didn't call it ( reckoned it was below the waist)
........
the batsman that threatened the umpire had just been given out in the second innings and took no further part in the game
....
umpires have the power to stop bowlers bowling for running on the wicket , practising on the field or for dangerous bowling ...but not the power to stop anything else
....
it's probably unnecessary as most captains will banish their dickheads (spirit of cricket) and if the threat of a lengthy ban isnt enough then the threat of a red card is minimal

Aye I think send offs are a nonsense. Most disputes are minor and equate to handbags at ten paces.
The best send off I can remember is the crowd giving FatArjuna the bird when he sent his team off when Chuck was called.

The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey.
They can't do that sort of thing in public. Send them both off to the dressing rooms where they can do it in private.
