See above: the only cricket-related post made on FB for the whole of Friday April 8.
(As the game's being played in Banga-land shouldn't the thread be called 'Bangladesh V South Africa' etc? And how the heck would you pronounce that place?)

Assumed that was a typo! Anyway, it’s in Yarpia… don’t know if it’s a renaming of somewhere more familiar?
It’s still the 8th in England, so plenty of time to add to the now three cricket posts…
Edit: The former Port Elizabeth, apparently. Which wasn’t named after the current British Queen, even if she’s been around long enough to have once been their head of state…

And the cricket? Solid progress from SA. Extras letting the side down with only one run in 74 overs (It was a wide as well, the rarest kind in the longer game!)

Have I missed that Rabada has retired from Test Cricket? If he hasn't, why is playing IPL?
Yarps 5/270 odd at stumps. All those out got starts. Seems the Bangles' bowlers stuck to their task.

Seemingly he and Ngidi opted out in favour of the circus. The apparently injured Nortje also quickly recovered to take part over there (and unleashed a 93mph beamer at former Test team-mate Kocky…) If they’d been playing England or Australia it might have had more bearing on their future.
Decent recovery from the Manics to get the Yarps 5 down. This could be a case for Mulder and… Verreynne?

As others have observed, it's the erstwhile PE. It would have been odd to have played the first test in Durban and the second in Bangerland at any rate.

Andy Bichel being the Gqeberha specialist doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Interesting that SA's so-called boy wonder - 'the next AB' Dewald Brevis, is already playing IPL rather than tests.

The SA Cricket Board seems to have a lot of trouble engendering national pride in its players.
Lots of early retirements and "opt-outs" to play in IPL.

Just like the old days when half of them went off to play for England or occasionally Australia… or just Kolpakked it over here in the county game.skully wrote:The SA Cricket Board seems to have a lot of trouble engendering national pride in its players.

Think they struggle to offer the financial rewards that Eng/Aus/Ind can give their players to keep them in the fold.

Solid scorecard for SA, ten double-figure scores but no century. Maharaj top-scores at number 8.
A Joyless start for the Bangles but a decent rebuild underway.

How does Marnus or Neser arriving at age 10 (with their immigrant parents) remotely equate to the classic Yarpom (played FC in Saffieland before moving to England) influx?

I still think racism is alive and rife in officialdom in SAf. I think the constant black quota pressure doesn't sit well with many "good school white boys".

Probably right but given how many good players of colour they have developed in recent times. they may not need quotas anymore.

It actually does - whether you're a 25-year-old cricketer, or a 40-year-old schoolteacher or engineer or nurse with children who may or may not grow up to be cricketers, there seems to be the same impetus to get the hell out of the joint.

Also Ken/Kevin McLeay. And we can swap BJ for Matt Sinclair, Lou Vincent and Aaron Redmond with NZ.
Only if you are going to get all whiny and proprietorial and bitter and self-righteous about it like our mutual 'ebsent frind' used to - which is damn near the last thing that it's any use the Yarp cricket Akelas doing. Also remember I'm one of those child migrants too.

No whining from me.
I think place of birth is an accident beyond any individuals control.
To a lesser extent decisions made by an individual’s parents before that individual reaches adulthood, or certainly adolescence, are beyond that individual’s control/choice.
I think a 25 year old changing his national allegiance purely to play cricket for that new nation is a different matter. Admirable in the case of d’Oliveira, cynical in the cases of Greig, Wessels, Lamb, Smith et al.

No more or less cynical than a 32 year old RAF-trained aero-engineer leaving the Yook to tighten the nuts on Australian F111's
In any case, it's 100% South Africa's problem, which was my main original point

Looks like the Bangers will go down again. When was the last time Seth Efrica opened with two spinners?
