Lardy -
With your track record of hatred towards Stuey, I don't think I can take that opinion seriously unless you have some well-argued reasons.

Why easily, apart from the fact Kumble is Indian?

And the fact that MacGill had a higher ratio of 'wickets of shit balls' than any other contemporary spinner.JKLever wrote:doremi wrote:Kumble. Easily.

I doubt doremi even considered the question before replying. He just smashed his fist down onto his keyboard in a desperate attempt to defend an Indian.
MacGill has a better average, better away average and much better strike rate so I don't see how it can be "easily".

Because as a bowler, Kumble's in a different class. Many people say, and perhaps rightly, that he has been the greatest matchwinner for India for the last 15 years. Our dominance at home can be primarily attributed to him.

Thanks MacDill. Your selfishness has cost us 2 Tests of development into whatever spin combination we're taking to India later in the year.

But the stats don't reflect this at all? Only that Kumble has had the longer career...

Did his carpal tunnel syndrome flare up before or during the Hobart Test..?Nath wrote:Thanks MacDill. Your selfishness has cost us 2 Tests of development into whatever spin combination we're taking to India later in the year.

Not sure, but, in hindsight, it was most noticeable there.

When comparing players I've seen for myself, I don't go for stats. Or seldom go for stats. Mainly because it's too much work. Of what I've seen of both, I think Macgill is more Bhajji class. Kumble is a class above.

Commentators saying MacGill arrived late at the ground today. Any idea what that was, or it it BS?

MacGill's nothing like Harbhajan, nor anywhere near as crap as him. For one, he rips the ball a long, long way, or at least did. Had it not been for the one delivery every few overs that was absolutely rank, MacGill was brilliant. An excellent googly to bamboozle even the best, and a sharp-spinning leggie to boot. I'd say he was world-class a few years back, but his Test return has shown how far past it he is.

Maybe it's the fact that I've seen him mostly against India. And he was seriosuly crap then.

No maybe's about it. Kumble takes MacGill anytime for me.
For me, spin bowling is not only about spin. Otherwise Sivaramakrishnan would have been an All Time Great. Nossir, spin bowling is about spin, but also loop, drift, line, length all wrapped up in what you can call precision, or 'control'.
MacGill >>> Kumble in spin.
In combining the rest ('control') Kumble was the master.

Furri is on the money as usual (and not on the turps). Apparently David Sincock spun the ball more than anyone else in history. David Who?

Just to clarify lardy's otherwise excellent post, I am on the money as usual.
Not on the turps, and there's no 'as usual' there. I resemble that inference.

I could resemble that interference as well, given enough time.
Anyway from cricinfo on David Sincock:
Sincock once told Gideon Haigh that his early retirement was brought about by the repetition of the game ... he could not see much point in trying to dismiss a batsman again if he had already got him out.
On way of looking at it, I guess.

Don't know why but i've never really thought of Kumble as 'that much' better than McGill.
I'd put neither of them on the same level as Murali/Warne.
Strangely McGill has performed better against England than Kumble has done, averaging 24 to Kumbles 30 - maybe that's why, i've simply not seen enough of Kumble in India
