Re: Bangladesh v India, Game 3, Kitply Cup, Dhaka, 12th June
Its not that Jaffer is any good on livelier tracks. But I personally think that UMB won't do any better as test opener as Jaffer did. Atleast Jaffer scored tons of runs on home tracks. Now I don't expect UMB to do that.
PS: I do think because of his ODI form, sooner or later UMB will be a part of Indian test team though its another matter that whenever he was given a chance in tests he proved to be an utter failure.

UMB is good against spinners (how he'll perform against Murali on his home tracks remains to be seen) without a doubt, but he is good against quality pace as well, now thats news to me.He is much better than Jaffer in facing quality pace and spin.

Why Goel, didn't he perform well against Australia in Australia? Where else do you want him to score?
PS: UMB means?

Yep, he did but only after getting atleast a dozen reprieves from both SL and Aussie fielders. Besides I'd say that was just a blip in otherwise mediocre career filled with full of useless and minnow bashing knocks.didn't he perform well against Australia in Australia?

Come on Goel! Can't a batsman improve? I've seen that he no longer has the deficiency in his technique of taking his foot too far across because of which he used to get LBW constantly, he has improved a lot on shorter deliveries though I can't say he is anywhere near being perfect.
I think he deserves a chance over Jaffer in the upcoming test series. Jaffer has been quite dismal in Australia against Lee.

Re: Bangladesh v India, Game 3, Kitply Cup, Dhaka, 12th June
Thats why they say stats could be misleading,
Here is how he performed during CB series,
1) Aus Vs India; Result: Draw; UMB: 39 (51)
2) SL Vs India; Result: Draw; UMB: 102 (101)
3) Aus Vs India; Result: Ind; UMB: 21 (43)
4) SL Vs India; Result: SL; UMB: 35 (33)
5) Aus Vs India; Result: Aus; UMB: 34 (42)
6) SL Vs India; Result: Ind; UMB: 15 (34)
7) Aus Vs India; Result: Aus; UMB: 113 (119)
8 ) SL Vs India; Result: Ind; UMB: 63* (89)
9) Aus Vs India; Result: Ind; UMB: 3 (4)
10) Aus Vs India; Result: Ind; UMB: 15 (16)
So there you see, in the matches either lost/drawn by India he scored heavily (210 runs @ 52 at a s/r of 92), while the matches India won, he hardly made any earth shattering contribution to Indian win (117 runs @ 29 at a s/r of 62).
And his only 'worthwhile' contrbution in Indian win (63* of 89 balls) came only often Tendulkar set the tone with a blazing half ton chasing a small SL total.

This was a very good inning. And you just can't fault Gambhir for India's loss there. We get victories through team effort and if the team was not upto it, then it wasn't Gambhir's fault. He has been much better than Jaffer I suppose, who litrally froze while watching Lee charging to bowl to him.

Agreed Chandan. That was a good innings by UMB. Finally after failing for so many matches against decent teams he finally did something worthwhile though not without receiving his customary share of reprieves from fielders.

ODIs and tests are totally 2 different ball games IMO.He has been much better than Jaffer I suppose, who litrally froze while watching Lee charging to bowl to him.
Lets see how UMB fares against Lee and Clark in test cricket on their own soil )or may even in India) before declaring UMB better than Jaffer.

How on earth can you blame Gambhir for only turning it on when India lose? Surely that means he is the only player in the team showing fight when the rest are failing?

Agreed. But he has been doing excellently in the longer format too and that too under pressure. Last year he did better than Jaffer in whatever matches Jaffer got to play. I think he deserves a chance.
Lets see how UMB fares against Lee and Clark in test cricket on their own soil )or may even in India) before declaring UMB better than Jaffer.
For that we'll have to wait for 4 more years. Will Lee and Clarke be around then?

But thats what he did. Besides I also accused him of not playing any part whatsoever in even one Indian win even when he was in form of his life. Was that just a coincidence? May be. Lets see how he corrects that anomaly. How on earth can you blame Gambhir for only turning it on when India lose?

Well you can't blame HIM for India losing if he's the team's top scorer. Other players should be blamed for not backing him up.

UMB won't have to wait for 4 years to face them. Australia will be touring us in October and I'm sure he'll get chance in that series. For that we'll have to wait for 4 more years.

i think with his t20 form he will get an extended run in the odi team. till now he has done little to prove he is anything but a minnow basher, but the next year or so should tell us if he has indeed made the step up to being a quality odi player for india

Lets see if he can bat well against them even on home soil. I highly doubt that. Besides a good bowler is a good bowler whether its home turf or away.Chandan wrote:SG wrote:UMB won't have to wait for 4 years to face them. All I meant that India won CB series despite him having his career best series (I think it would remain his best scoring series in his career unless it contains minnows).SG wrote:I never did that. Oh Doremi. If it was on the flattest of the flat track, why didn't every player hit a ton? What stopped them?

They are above such FTBing I guess? Come on, you've got to admit Gambhir is no good ... just look at him play! He plays the ugliest shots with the loosest technique ever.

Watching him play immediately after watching Sachin play is like the biggest turn off after the humungous-est of turn ons.
