What a dumb hypocrite.
Fatty Smith is asking the ICC to revisit its 10 year schedule in view of the arduous lot the international player has to confront. Smith has complained about only having 7 days at home during the past year or so.
Does memory fail me or didn't he opt to play in the IPL for 7 weeks when he might have been resting and living in his own house?
Time for his limited brain cells to understand that you can't have your cake and eat it.

After the best moment in his career by far, in shepherding South Africa to a Test series win in England, Proteas captain Graeme Smith now has a chance to sit back and recover from an exhausting year in cricket.
He is forced to sit out, as a result of a bout of tennis elbow, and he is not expected to do much beyond keeping fit in the gym for the next two months.
Other big-name players like Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis have suffered from the same ailment in the past. "Once you have surgery the problem seems to go away, but I think the problem with Jacques (in 2005/06) was that he kept coming back too early," Smith said today.
The Proteas' medical team want to avoid surgery for Smith, so he is on orders to rest, after having had injections into arm tendons in England.
South Africa's next major assignment is an away tour to Australia from December, and the plan is to have Smith ready for that. The rest will do the SA captain good, given that he has also had hamstring and back niggles this year.
He does think, though, that the International Cricket Council will have to revisit its 10-year programme for international cricket, specially with 20-over cricket growing fast. "Cricket is moving forward at pace, and there is a lot of money coming into the game," Smith said.
"I've spent seven days at home since March. It takes its toll mentally and emotionally, and in terms of injuries. There have been so many changes in the game in the last 18 months. The ICC needs to plan carefully. It's a huge responsibility."
As to South Africa's poor form in the ODI series against England (the final match is scheduled for today), Smith said a team weakened by the loss of Shaun Pollock and Charl Langeveldt, as well as the return of the in-form Andrew Flintoff to the opposition ranks, were just two of the factors behind the 4-0 scoreline.
Names like Ryan McLaren and Dillon du Preez were names that cropped up as future one-day caps, but Smith said that settling on a style that the team wanted to play, and getting the next cadre of players up to the required level gradually so that they would be ready when called on, was the way to go.
Meanwhile Proteas coach Mickey Arthur, is currently being headhunted by three English counties - Middlesex, Surrey and Hampshire - to take up the post of Mana.
"It's very flattering to be approached by these counties, and I've had chats with them, but nothing has been finalised," Arthur said.

How could you disagree though? The mercenary takes the cash from the IPL when he could have been resting but now starts whingeing about this taxing schedule.

Re: What a dumb hypocrite.
It does seem hypocritical ...until you read what he said ...
Cricket has changed...because of T20 and the IPL..since the Future Tours Program was introduced ...unfortunately there is too much money in the IPL for it to fold ...Cricket Authorities who think that cricketers will play for their country before playing for $$$$ must have forgotten about Packer and World Series Cricket ...
He does think, though, that the International Cricket Council will have to revisit its 10-year programme for international cricket, specially with 20-over cricket growing fast. "Cricket is moving forward at pace, and there is a lot of money coming into the game," Smith said.

Re: What a dumb hypocrite.
Packer and WSC was a different era. Prior to that Sheffield Shield players were being $8 per day and our Aussie cricketers were receiving a meagre portion of huge gate-takings. These days cricketers are relatively well rewarded. Nonetheless if Smith would prefer to be a hit in the IPL rather than a international player, let him chase the $$$$$$$$$$$. I don't like the ICC by why should they revisit their schedules because of Indian billionaires. If some players retire prematurely it's their perogative and maybe we will see some fresh young talent on the scene instead.

$8 a day vs Packer's wages is the equivalent of current payments vs IPL $$$ possibilities (plus the IPL gives you 11 months holiday) ...The ICC Putting their head in the sand and ignoring the IPL will ruin cricket ...

The point I'm making is that players in those days were justified in seeking more money because the ACB as it was then known, would not come to the party and give the players what they truly deserved.
The ICC does have to be aware of the T20 revolution but not at the expense of test cricket. If it is compelled to dilute test schedules to accommodate T20 the game will be poorer. As I said, let some of the oldies retire prematurely for the almighty $ and it will be up to them to see how it might affect how posterity will judge them. Nobody is indispensable; there is always new talent on the block.

As I'm reading Ms McCulloughs series on the Roman Empire I'm curious as to whom is sitting on the throne in your avatar? Was it a real figure like the guy who said "wait for it" VENI VEDI VICI.
Or another drag photo?

It's the same point ....even if you can make a sqillion dollars playing test cricket if you can make two squillion dollars playing IPL a lot will go there....weeding out Test quality players just weakens the standard of Test cricket ...and therefore makes T20 competitions better

Most seem to forget the IPL offers big purses only to those that are established in international cricket (with the exception of Indians). You drop out of the limelight and your purse gets smaller till it disappears. Symonds has been advised to continue playing for Australia by the IPL board.

Thought so too.
This came on the back of media reports that Symonds may be considering retirement from international cricket. Takes any delusions out of the equation, imo.

Come on guys he has an agent who's not stupid.
Retirement was never a consideration unless he quit cricket altogether.

Shaun Marsh , Luke Ronchi & Luke Pomersbach all got $US 50,000 IPL contracts ...more than their Wozzie state contracts and only 4 weeks of work ...Marsh and Pomersbach will get asked back at higher rates
