Australia - South Africa trophy
It is time.
So, what to call it?
Pollock-Warne appeals to me but TGM already has his name on an two-nation trophy, so Pollock-McGrath might do.
Might even leave it vague about which Pollock.

The Pollock name should be on it.

"Why give it a name?"
(shrugs) On one hand to honour great players, on the other to imbue the trophy and hence the contest with some of the lustre of those players.

Considering some of the great Saffie cricketers haven't even got a number, perhaps this could compensate somewhat.OP Tipping wrote:"Why give it a name?"

I didn't have a problem with the 'Border-Gavaskar' trophy. The 'Chappell-Hadlee' thing is a bit cringeworthy, but to have Warne and Murali playing for a trophy named after them was a bit much. You could call it the Southern Cross trophy or something, and it'd be just as effective.OP Tipping wrote:"Why give it a name?"

We used to call the NZ battles the Trans-Tasman before CH, so why not something boring like Trans-Indian?

I've always thought the Kepler Wessels Trophy or Kepler Wessels Cup would be a good name.
It covers both bases and works for me historically.
Wessels was after all South Africa's first captain upon readmission.
But he might not be considered "great" enough to get a Trophy named after him (I contest that it didn't stop Basil D'Oliveira getting a trophy named in his honour).
In that case I plump for Pollock-Waugh. The Pollocks and the Waughs are two great cricketing families. Graeme and Peter played in South Africa's last series before isolation. Shaun played in the first decade after readmission. Mark Waugh's two greatest innings were probably against South Africa. Steve captained Australia to a 5-1 win in 2001/2.
Either way, we need a trophy.

We still call it the Trans-Tasman trophy. It's only the JAMODI series that is named Chappell-Hadlee.

Re: Australia - South Africa trophy
Actually I did know that the Chappell-Hadlee trophy was only for the one day series, everyone knows that, but I was commenting on the fact that the NZ/OZ battles were always known as Trans-Tasman in any format before the CH was instituted. Thus I suggested that the SA/OZ battles could be linked to the Indian Ocean.
I would have thought Taipan that a fresh new year and Protea success might have allowed you to let up on the sniping. Seems I'm wrong though.

You going to give up on the Smith baiting?

Was it really baiting? - I just didn't like him.
Anyway he's done well and he's led his team extremely well bearng in mind the cultural mosaic that is South Africa. I'll acknowledge that and I know a lot of people who are tough judges of character who've been very impressed with his demeanour, sportmanship, cricket etc. since he's arrived on our shores so this has been a tour of redemption for him. He's proven that sometimes making mistakes when you're young can be a good thing and be character building. He's in doubt for the Sydney test and out of the ODIs. I bet even he wouldn't have written such a script for 2008.
So Taipan, the saffa cricket fans should be over the moon, so cool it on the sniping.
